I did it for my fellow queue hogger haters

In the queue for a few bits ( basket) , guy standing in front of me, two other people in front of him. As he got to the end of the belt he beckoned over the woman in the next aisle (who had one person in front of her) she had a trolley load of shopping and I realised he was standing in the queue saving a place.!!!! So I said something. Polite but firm. He tried to bluster his way out of it and said it made no difference since he could have been standing in front of me with the trolley, so I said, “ But you weren’t, and if you had been then I would have chosen a different queue.” So he graciously ( huh) said I could go in front of them . I just as graciously said Thankyou. I was hoping the people behind me would say “And what about us?” but they didn’t.

🏅so I am awarding myself this lovely medal celebrating OWPA (Q) , old woman polite assertiveness (queuing)

A well deserved award! 👏👏👏👏

TomatoSoupIsLikeVampiresBlood · 17/09/2023 19:11

👏🏻Good on ya!
I’d have silently seethed because I’m too cowardly to confront.

Freezingcoldinseptember · 17/09/2023 19:11

Well blooming done op!!

SisterMichaelsHabit · 17/09/2023 19:13

Nice one.

DappledThings · 17/09/2023 19:35

I don't get what he did wrong. He was in the queue. I assume it was his shared trolley load that then joined him.

I assume it was what I have seen happen. One person stands in one queue, one in another, the first one to the till calls the other over and in this case the one that was at the till had no items to pay for so was therefore place saving and being an arse by expecting the people behind to wait when they would probably not have been in that queue if they had known there was going to be a long wait.

Just sounds efficient to me.

I'm very suspicious of you OP, you're not a real Mumsnetter, are you? 😬😬

A real MNetter would've done absolutely nothing because they 'froze' as they 'don't like confrontation'.

And then raced home to start a thread telling us how the cashier sneered and everybody shouted and screamed at them.

For them, but not for everyone else who works out which queue to join based on the number of items the people already in the queue have to buy.

Which sounds mildly irritating. I still don't think it's a breach of any etiquette worthy of challenge.

RaininSummer · 17/09/2023 20:38

Bloody cheeky. I would pick a different queue if someone had a big trolley load. Can't go around doing that and expect to get away with it

Positivelypatient · 17/09/2023 21:30

Good for you I would've said something too as I'm now past the point of caring what anyone thinks of me.

Not quite the same but I was in the queue at Aldi a while back, just a small basket of things, the guy behind me asks if he can go in front of me as he only has two things. I looked at him and said no. He then mutters under his breathe something about kindness being a thing of the past and it doesn't cost anything. So I asked him if he was going to ask the person in front of me if he could go in front of them aswell? and he said no, just you. So I said well you can wait.

It just so bloody pisses me off that a man thought his time was worth more than mine. I can bet you a £100 quid he would not have asked the same thing of a another man. Sends me fuming.

You think I am scared of those narrowed eyes? Tosses head, waves medal triumphantly and very slightly menacingly.

Dappled Things you are clearly as cool as the coolest things imaginable. I do hope you don’t find yourself behind an opportunistic queuer say at an amusement park when a sudden influx of relatives belonging to the person in front of you mysteriously materialise from the place where they have been relaxing in the shade, to claim their place ahead of you and yours. Though I am sure you would deal with the situation with elan and composure.

A real mumsnetter would have been "baffled" by the entitlement.

Unless you had reason to be in a hurry and had specifically chosen that queu because it would be quicker. Well done op!!!!
