Scam on Facebook but I don't understand it

I'm probably missing something obvious here but I am selling an item on Facebook. I had a buyer interested, asked a few questions about the item and agreed to pay. I was hesitant to get money before collection so asked if they can pay cash on collection. They were adamant that they couldn't do this as their son would pick up.

I gave them my PayPal link but they said please send my your email address which I did. They then said they've sent the payment but nothing came through but when I checked my email a fake email from PayPal appeared in my junk saying X amount has been received but funds are on hold etc.

I blocked and deleted the chat as clearly was a scam. But I don't quite get what's the scam here. After checking the profile I don't even think they live in the UK! So clearly noone would be able to come to pick up the item anyway? Am I missing something here?

Probably one of two things... they send you something that looks like PayPal to make you think the money has gone in... someone comes to pick it up and gets the item for free.

More likely scam is you try signing in to fake-Pal and use your username and password... they then use that to access your real account and empty accounts. They might also try this password on other accounts because some people are lazy with passwords.

The email said something about keeping the money on hold till I upgrade to a business account or something. I didn't click on the link though so not sure what else they would ask for

I don't sell anything to anybody unless they come to the house and pay cash

I was warned about letting people pay on PayPal. They pay. Send someone to collect. They then go back to PayPal to say item never received. PayPal refunds so item has gone along with money. I replied saying cash only. They didn't want it then funnily enough. Cash only on collection.

I was trying to sell something and I got contacted by scammers too. I think they send fake PayPal confirmation and someone to pick up the item as some sellers believe that the money is on its way but pending based on their confirmation so they given them the item.

I have had a few buyers try to scam me on Facebook marketplace and after putting up some more items yesterday, I have another one trying it on again!! She wants to send chronopost to my house with the cash to cover the cost of the item and then collect it and deliver to them. I know it’s a scam so I want to try to prolong it as
long as possible and take the p!ss out of them and yes I’m bored and have too much time on my hands 😏 I need some good ideas 💡

Yes I’ve had the same from 2 enquirers. A Wendy M Green and Mary Joly both pulled out when I asked for cash on collection. Dirty scammers. Obviously Facebook offers little protection on this.
