People who don't use earphones on public transport

heartsinvisiblefury · 17/09/2023 17:38

Why do these people think that everyone else wants to listen to their choice of music or whatever video they're watching?

Does anyone on here do this and if so, why? What makes you so entitled?

I agree . Also having conversations on loud speaker. Fair enough and it's ok to hear them talk but the person they talk to too drives me mad.

MsInterpret · 17/09/2023 17:42

Drives me mad.

One person had the BBC24 News on with rolling headlines? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Someone else (a middle-aged man) listening to a playlist that I'd guess was entitled 'Hen Do Hits from the 80s and 90s' - Think Shania Twain...

Is it a cultural thing? Less of a problem in countries with less uptight people than us?! 🤣

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 17/09/2023 17:44

Utter twats.

And they seem to be breeding. Every fucker with a phone seems to be listening something at high volume.

Bastards.

DappledThings · 17/09/2023 17:50

This would be punishable with an instant £10k fine if I was in charge. No second chances. Second offence is £20k and a 6 month ban from all public transport.

itsgettingweird · 17/09/2023 17:55

Or talk to their phone riddled hand on loud speaker as if I need to know what your mate did last night and with who!

Inkypot · 17/09/2023 17:58

Oh this winds me up too! Because of one of these people I got the courtesy of hearing all about how some young Curry's employee had given her boss a blow job at break time and the whole shop had found out so now she wasn't sure if she'd be fired. Never got to hear the end but did feel quite invested by the time she got off the train.

Rarewaxwing · 17/09/2023 17:58

My DH complained to Southern Rail on my behalf after I had an awful journey because of exactly this issue. Obviously, it isn't Southern Rail's fault. Nevertheless, he received an amazing response from them to say that many trains have 'quiet carriages' and that it's possible to select quieter trains on the app (ie trains that are usually less populated).

Neither of these options ensure that you won't meet the fuckers who play their music / watch videos / talk loudly on their phones without being respectful enough to wear headphones, but it slightly reduces the likelihood.

Essentially, though, it's about people not being considerate about others. I don't know why we're so bad at it here in the UK. I've travelled on trains in Norway and Sweden recently and they were blissfully quiet.

heartsinvisiblefury · 17/09/2023 17:58

I agree with either a fine or you get told to get off at the next stop and not get back on until you've invested in some earphones.

^ I don't understand this either.
People walking along the street with a call on loud speaker and then holding it up to their face saying "what did you say" because they can't hear it because of road noise etc.
Well here's an idea - use a phone as it was designed, to your ear and you'll hear it perfectly and we all won't have to hear your conversation!
Hands free is great when you're at home and doing the washing up or something but walking down the street or on the bus it's not needed.

ThreeBearsPorridge · 17/09/2023 18:04

I was on a bus with someone doing this the other day. I was so annoyed. He was East European so I hesitated to confront him.

AgentProvocateur · 17/09/2023 18:10

I’d bring back the death penalty for this (only half joking).

I always book the quiet carriage and in my experience train staff very rarely confront people making noise in the quiet carriages.

HermioneWeasley · 17/09/2023 18:16

Oh lord, I did this by accident recently. Put headphones in and music on and didn’t realise it was actually playing through thr phone and not my headphones. Was mortified when someone pointed it out

How disappointing.

SoftPillowAllNight · 17/09/2023 18:19

I also find that people who talk on their phone using headphones talk very loudly - they can't hear themselves so they shout. Whilst I'm grateful that I don't have to hear the other person I don't enjoy jumping out of my skin every-time this person starts talking. The last time this happened I was on the District line tube (which is relatively quiet for a tube) and I could not stand it. I want across until the 'offender' could see my face, and put my finger on my lips. Wasn't aggressive and didn't say a word, but he got the message and his volume went down (a bit). Wish I'd do it everytime but sometimes I'm not bothered/too tired/not in the mood for confrontation...

I just want a law - that says it's illegal to have your speaker on in public transport and for people to talk loudly (define a decibel that's acceptable)

SoftPillowAllNight · 17/09/2023 18:20

*LEANT not want

ALongHardWinter · 17/09/2023 18:21

Seems to be the done thing nowadays. There is an absolute epidemic of it around where I live. Never a day goes by when I'm on a bus or train or in a coffee shop without someone playing music out loud on their phone or having a phone conversation on loud speaker. I'd never say anything because I'm afraid of the consequences. I've witnessed several nasty incidents on buses over the last year when someone has been brave enough to confront them.

TenOhSeven · 17/09/2023 18:28

I hate this. Every time I go on public transport these days there's some selfish fecker doing this. I wish there was some way to manufacture phones to have no loud speaker option unless headphones were used.

Okaygoahead · 17/09/2023 18:36

I don’t understand why transport companies don’t run public service campaigns pointing out how stupid and inconsiderate it is

Totally agree - there should be posters up pointing out how inconsiderate and entitled it is and that it risks a fine

When I’m in charge it’ll be perfectly legal to pick up whatever device is being used and to smash it on the floor.

I personally think there has been a drop in standards and care for others all round.

LadybirdsAreFab · 17/09/2023 18:55

It’s called sodcasting, a very fitting word. It’s really bad here in Dubai as well. I had one mum who’s son was playing Peppa Pig very loudly on his iPad in a coffee shop, I asked her politely to either use children’s headphones or turn the volume down, I was told she didn’t want to deal with him and she was in the coffee shop to get some peace & quiet, she had noise cancelling headphones. He was 3 or 4. I now carry headphones with me, I don’t play anything but it muffles the sound.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 17/09/2023 18:56

When I rule the world I'll add "how to behave on public transport" to the national curriculum and the Life in the UK test. It will include queuing for the bus and keeping your feet off the seats. As well as not having loud conversations with your friend on the bus, not using loudspeaker and using headphones.

MinnieMountain · 17/09/2023 19:01

Plenty of people ignore quiet carriages these days. I normally book them when travelling alone but I won’t bother now.

Can you add no stinky food and no dousing in half a bottle of Boots’ finest?

Please?
