People who don't use earphones on public transport

Why do these people think that everyone else wants to listen to their choice of music or whatever video they're watching?

Does anyone on here do this and if so, why? What makes you so entitled?

I am an offender of sorts. My phone is dodgy and I cannot hear at all from the earpiece and so am sorted to put it on speaker. However I avoid answering in public unless it could be urgent and would never actively make a call, as I feel like such a twat holding the hone to my mouth and having it on speaker.

I do hate it though.

IWasJustAChild · 17/09/2023 21:56

I am hard of hearing but I don't wear a visible hearing aid so nobody has an idea. I try to avoid speaking on or answering phone if I can't help it when I'm on public transport. The other day I couldn't avoid it, and what was worse is that even before my phone rang behind me was a guy shouting loudly into his phone too. Maybe he was also hard of hearing .

I do try not to do it though because it's as irritating AF.

I was on a bus with someone doing this the other day. I was so annoyed. He was East European so I hesitated to confront him.

I don't understand what his nationality has to do with not wanting to confront him? Why should there be a different rule for those from EE?

This would be punishable with an instant £10k fine if I was in charge. No second chances. Second offence is £20k and a 6 month ban from all public transport.

You get my vote!!

XenoBitch · 17/09/2023 22:05

I hate this too.
And what is the trend for no longer holding phones to your ear about? I don't want to hear both sides of a stranger's phone conversation, and I am sure whoever they are talking to would not be too happy about being broadcast for all to hear either.

Listening to music out loud seemed to tail off for a few years after the initial years of smartphones, but it seems the arrival of more film and telly on smartphone has started it off again.

The worst is on aeroplanes, which seems to have become an issue in the last few years, and I wish they would just announce at the start of flights that people listening to any audio on devices without headphones is not permitted.

IWasJustAChild · 17/09/2023 22:09

Sorry but the racism/xenophobia, whatever you call it has left me stunned.

Wrongsideofpennines · 17/09/2023 22:10

My husband recently took an overnight National Express coach journey and said there were several people playing music. Like even if you forgot your headphones how hard can it be to just not listen to music for a few hours. People are trying to sleep for goodness sake.

Because us "eastern Europeans" are so uncivilized obvs, you wouldn't want to confront us... that is if he even was Eastern European at all.

I'm in a local Facebook group and sadly we often get people posting about someone who has parked their van somewhere, cue comments such as "I bet they're a thief/dog snatcher/county lines drug person etc " and "looks eastern European."

How the F does someone even look EE? Considering EE is made up of many different countries and ethnic groups?

When I rule the world I'll add "how to behave on public transport" to the national curriculum and the Life in the UK test. It will include queuing for the bus and keeping your feet off the seats. As well as not having loud conversations with your friend on the bus, not using loudspeaker and using headphones.

I'll help you with the syllabus. 😃

Bags occupying empty seats (particularly when the train is clearly busy), letting people get off the train before trying to get on and not sitting in seats that are obviously reserved would be on my list.

Can you add no stinky food and no dousing in half a bottle of Boots’ finest?

Please?

Yes! I don't have a sense of smell anymore, but will add this to to curriculum.

Argh yes. Bags. 2 women got on the bus the other day. Between them and their feet and bags they took up 6 seats. And the foot space that my feet and one of their feet (one of their pairs of feet? One of theirs feet?) Should have shared. Gah.

Hawkins0009 · 18/09/2023 00:46

its like those large stereo's in the 70's / 80's

corlan · 18/09/2023 00:55

This week I had the pleasure of listening to a woman on the bus broadcasting a podcast on how to manifest what you want from the universe.
I was sorely tempted to ask her if she could manifest herself a pair of fucking headphones.

treacledan71 · 18/09/2023 03:46

Also if you are sitting at window seat and ask the person to move so you can get off and they just move their legs and don't stand up so have to climb over them. I told one once I am fat you need to move lol and knocked her with my bag

wednesdayatone · 18/09/2023 12:54

Last time i took a train, i had to move twice because of this

I often listen to music when i dont want to because id rather not here the man next to me watching an action thriller on his phone

wednesdayatone · 18/09/2023 12:57

Remember when, back in the 80s, groups of youths would have a ghetto blaster on their shoulder at the back of the bus?

OnionBag · 18/09/2023 17:59

@heartsinvisiblefury i forgot to tag you in that 👆🏻

What ?

Sorry I should have clarified. I thought maybe he didn’t understand that listening to a loud film in Polish on a bus was really annoying for others.
