I never used to for some reason, but now do and realise I've missed out on loads of context for many books!

Of course.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 17/09/2023 17:37

Yes, but if it looks like it’s going to contain spoilers I usually read it afterwards.

Esgaroth · 17/09/2023 17:51

No, it often gives away plot points. Sometimes I read it afterwards.

Usually afterwards and I read all the old thank you gubbins at the back as well.

that's so cute. and so polite.

as though you're thinking 'ah well seeing as the author's gone to all this trouble to write thank you to 'the best ever agent' and 'the most wonderful husband' it would be rude of me to close the book without reading it.

Scruffington · 17/09/2023 18:07

No. I find, especially if it's a classic novel, that they give away too many plot points in the foreword 'When Jane discovered Mr Rochester was blinded after wrestling a grizzly bear...'

I prefer to jump straight into the story and might revisit the foreword afterwards.

Butteredtoast55 · 17/09/2023 18:11

If it's a commentary on the book or a dry as dust opinion piece showing off the writers detailed knowledge of how the author spent three months in a Tibetan monastery etc etc. Then no. If it's a short scene setter then yes.
But I do read the thank yous 😊

What I don't like though is when they attach a chapter of their next book. Don't leave me hanging!
