Old school dramas and boxsets.

I'm in the mood for some old fashioned comfort viewing. Can anyone please recommend some old miniseries/dramas/period dramas?

To give a few examples I'm about to start watching North and South(The drama about the U.S Civil War). I also recently bought Heidi and Roots. (Roots I know is far from comforting but it's an old series that I feel I have to watch especially as I recently bought the book.)

Any suggestions would be very welcome.

TIA

I just realised that this wasn't in TV as it was supposed to be.

Apologies.

Have you tried any films based on Catherine Cookson books? AFAIK they are all available on UKTVPlay and most of them are a really good watch!

Aside from those already mentioned;

A Horseman Riding By (1978)
To Serve Them All My Days (early 1980s)

(disclaimer - I haven't seen them for years & don't know how they stand up, but I think you can see "To Serve Them All My Days" on youtube).
Also Anne of Green Gables (with Megan Follow) - used to be on youtube.

All creatures great and small. Original series.

The 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice is my go to for such times. Almost perfect television, with such chemistry between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy.

The Pallisers - 24 episodes to get stuck into! It’s all six of the Anthony Trollope novels, televised in the 70s. First episode is a bit slow to start, but very soon addictive. Everything from an heiress pressured into marrying a man she didn’t love, to a murder, with a scheming little widow and a £10k diamond necklace* thrown in.

Susan Hampshire played one of the main characters.

*The novel with that bit, The Eustace Diamonds, is my favourite.

BBC version of Box of Delights
Famous Five
Also The Castle of Adventure, filmed in the 80s (not the New Zealand set)
Swallows and Amazons (old version)

Those are my comfort ones.

themez · 17/09/2023 19:57

Oh the Box of Delights! Yes good shout! Time and tide and buttered eggs wait for no man!

I use that one frequently for the dc. They did one time ask what buttered eggs were-what we called scrambled.

Mine are mostly crime, so may not be quite what you’re looking for 👀🤣

Miss Marple (Joan Hickson only)
Cracker
McCallum (I’d forgotten about this until I started typing!)
