Jobs for 14 year olds

14 year old DS (yr 10 at school) would like a Saturday job, likely retail or catering but would consider most things. Does anyone know where to look, initial searches for Tesco, Sainsbury etc they have to be over school leaving age.

Paper round is not an option around here.

Thanks

DS is 14 too and just gone into year 10. He has a pot washing job in a cafe. He’s really enjoying it and is learning a lot about working life 😂. He also loves having plenty of money.

I think a local cafe is going to be most likely

I would have thought most places will want national insurance card?

I used to work in an independent hospitality place and we employed lots of young people, our minimum age was 15 though. At school age there are restrictions on how long they can work for and what days of the week and rules around breaks so given a choice between a 16 yr old and a 14yr most businesses would employ the 16yr old

BertieBotts · 16/09/2023 18:16

Small businesses. Ask around friends and family.

Big chains generally never employ under 16s.

BertieBotts · 16/09/2023 18:16

A paper round is a good option too.

Our local chippy takes from 14, the shifts are 4pm-8pm so it's pretty good hours for this age group, although it's fast paced so they need to be quite resilient.

Cantthinkofadifferentname · 16/09/2023 18:20

Depending on your council, businesses need a licence to employ under 16s, so puts off employers

And free chips!

My 15yo works in a local pub washing pots & serving tables (he does really well with tips!), has a paper round & also has a little gardening business. He's always buying & selling things as well (lawn mowers, bikes etc.) He earns good money!
