Just realised something didn’t scan at self serve

Was doing a top up shop earlier in a major supermarket we frequent multiple times a week.

An item that cost £3 did not scan. DH and I were there together and we definitely attempted to scan everything, I’m sure I heard a beep for every item. Paid the £15 total and left the shop. I thought it was cheaper than expected but there had been a few offers on, so I looked over the receipt to check the offers and noticed the item missing from the list. Oops!

I noticed this as we had got home. I’m mortified and think I should contact customer service. DH thinks not to; 1) they may think it’s more suspicious, 2) they are unlikely to care as it wasn’t deliberate and it’s a very large business making lots of profit, and we are regular shoppers there.

I’m worrying now that they might have noticed in some way and check next time? What would you do here.

Do whatever makes you feel.most comfortable

thiswasabadone · 16/09/2023 17:30

😂

Move on.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 16/09/2023 17:30

Id keep the packet in my handbag and scan it at the next shop.

00100001 · 16/09/2023 17:30

You'll be fine.

If it bothers you that much, pop to customer services and "confess" and pay for the missed item.

Id keep the packet in my handbag and scan it at the next shop.

I wouldn’t do this as if you get seen it will definitely look dodgy .

hauntedvagina · 16/09/2023 17:34

Move on. If they were that arsed about items being missed from the scan, they'd pay a professional to do it or make all customers go through training before using the till.

Clefable · 16/09/2023 17:34

I wouldn't bother. I accidentally shoplifted a pack of baby wipes when I was a couple of weeks PP with DC2 - I'd put them on pram while going round shop and then just walked out with them after paying for the other stuff. I did mention it to the friendly checkout lady next time I was in and offered to pay but she just laughed and said I am not the first exhausted mum to do that!

NutellaNut · 16/09/2023 17:35

Don’t worry about it. If it bothers your conscience, just stick the equivalent amount in a charity box at the store next time.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 16/09/2023 17:38

If it's going to worry you then phone customer services, explain and see if you can pay over the phone. That's what I would do, not because I think you should but I would rather address it than worry about it. I do have anxiety though. If I thought It wouldn't play on my mind I'd probably forget about it and move on

Holidayhouse1010 · 16/09/2023 17:41

I never understand how anyone gets away with it, accidentally or not, as when I do it they come over and check most of it with their machine thing every time. Tesco clearly thing I am a criminal 🤣

TonTonMacoute · 16/09/2023 17:42

Retail outlets are facing a tsunami of shoplifting atm, they aren’t going to be worried about this genuine mistake.

Dacadactyl · 16/09/2023 17:43

I'd just go to the customer services desk next time I was in and explain. Bring the empty packet back to them to scan and sort it that way

kitsuneghost · 16/09/2023 17:43

Nah. If they want you to do it yourself, they gotta expect mistakes

ShutTheDoorBabe · 16/09/2023 17:43

I would just think, "Oops!" and then forget about it.

MariePaperRoses · 16/09/2023 17:50

Something to consider is when you pass over in life and are eagerly walking up the steps to the Pearly Gates knowing you will be reunited with loved ones who have gone before you.....

Saint Peter might take you to one side and say to you, "Just one thing, about that Pot Noodle you didn't pay for in 2023....."

You run the risk of being turned away from heaven.Sad

Why not buy something for £3 the next time you go shopping and put it in the food bank trolley on your way out to ensure Saint Peter will give you a high five as he lets you in through the Pearly gates.

BingoandBlueyForever · 16/09/2023 17:51

Everyone has accidentally shoplifted an item or two over the years. If I notice when I’m still at the tills then I put it through as a separate transaction and pay. If I don’t realize until I’ve left the shop I consider it a bonus discount.

JoinInBetty · 16/09/2023 17:52

i self scanned 2 coronation cups and saucer using the Asda scanner one was chipped so I put it back and deleted the item. Keeping one
got home and i had deleted both cups and saucers - God Save the King - I'll send it to Charles if the police turn up on my door

SkyeBlue28 · 16/09/2023 17:54

I personally wouldn’t worry about it. These things happen.

ShowOfHands · 16/09/2023 17:55

I don't think it matters about corporations or if other people do it or whether you give to charity after the event. You made a mistake, you feel bad and want to rectify it. So either give the customer service people a quick ring or stop at the customer service desk when you're in next as you go frequently anyway.

Don't give it a second thought :)

TheThingIsYeah · 16/09/2023 18:06

Accept it as payment for doing the cashiers job for them because they are too tight to employ till staff. They use self-scans under the excuse of being "convenient" for the customer when really it's to maximise shareholder dividends.

'kin hate those tills.

YepYepYepYep · 16/09/2023 18:07

If mention it next time I was in the store. It's stupid to suggest that the store might find it suspicious! Why would they think that.

I'd always complain if I was overcharged but I'll always mention it if I accidentally end up getting something for free.

If you phone up they might well tell you not to worry and to keep the item.
That's happened everytime I've received something extra I've not paid for in my online shopping. I phone and tell them, they say thank you and tell me to keep it. I've done the right thing AND get something free as a bonus.

I wouldn't have given it any thought. People who mull over things like this are usually just looking for a reason not to own up 😅

grumpycow1 · 16/09/2023 18:07

OP do you have anxiety? I can’t imagine being mortified - i would just think ‘oops’ and definitely not being upset enough to post on mumsnet! It would be different if it was a tiny independent business, I’d go back and fess up in that case.

Myneighboursarewankers · 16/09/2023 18:08

Really not worth worrying about. It’s happened to me many times over the years. The joys of shopping with small children and getting flappy with all the noise and distractions (me not them!)
