I want an 'Instagram' worthy house

Draconis · 16/09/2023 15:06

I'm looking around my tip of a house and just want to Chuck everything into a skip and start again.

That's a bit extreme so what can I do instead?

Decluttering is a good place to start.

Also buying storage. I love storage....

PurpleBananaSmoothie · 16/09/2023 15:09

Do you not think Instagram houses are all the same and lacking personality?

Anyway, what are the issues? If the house is cluttered, de-clutter. If it’s looking a bit tired, just start updating one room at a time (which is how most people do it in real life).

Thatsmorethanhalf · 16/09/2023 15:10

Better a Draconis house imho

ReeseWitherfork · 16/09/2023 15:12

Their crap is all behind the camera.

WonkyDesk · 16/09/2023 15:16

I feel the same about mine. It will never happen. I think having the time to sort, organise and clean is a big factor. My house lacks storage units and cupboards, which doesn't help matters. It does remind me of covid and when people would film in front of the "good wall" the one most recently painted even though the other rooms weren't neat or tidy. We see only part of the picture.

Draconis · 16/09/2023 15:17

Yeah, im sure they have stuff out of camera shot but I like how Clean and tidy and, yes, uncluttered they look.
With nice decor pieces and cushions.
When I tried to get some nice cushions, I got a bit overwhelmed and didn't know what colours to go for Blush

Yep, it's like my sourdough bread, sometimes there was a very dodgy side to the loaf! Unless it was #showusyourfuckedloaves, the pics always looked good!

Orangewall · 16/09/2023 15:22

My house is far from Instagram worthy but it does have a theme and everything ties in together without being greige. Where you say you didn’t know what colours to go for with cushions - I picked a colour scheme of about 5/6 colours on Pinterest that I love and stick to it religiously when buying anything new.

Bananas1350 · 16/09/2023 15:24

If y want ideas have a look on Pinterest. So many different colours and ways to style a house.

Draconis · 16/09/2023 15:29

My walls are all blank because I don't know what to put on them.

I like lots of things so just can't pinpoint a style. I am basically clueless Sad

My house would be close to Instagram-worthy if I was the only one living in it.

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 16/09/2023 15:33

All the ones I see are being done up, so in various states of repair!

SherbetLemonn · 16/09/2023 15:35

Honestly my house is so far from a super clean, matchy matchy insta house BUT it is much more like one of the ‘cottagecore’ type houses now. I had a bit of a moment of ‘oh my god my house is SO tired looking’ about 12 months ago or so and just went a bit mad 😂 I decluttered as though my life depended on it, no mercy, and gradually bought bits and pieces for decoration that matched the ‘theme’ I was going for (each thing I bought, I tried to get rid of something already there) and I clean a lot more now. I’d got into a bit of a rut of doing the obvious and basic but committed to the organised mum method (I think it’s called) and forced myself to really work at it and do those jobs I’d been putting off. It also extended to my garden so I now grow a lot of flowers, roses particularly… probably a good thing as my husband was starting to raise eyebrows at the amount of cut flowers I was buying 🤣
Anyway I’m rambling. Obviously this might be a mile from the style you want but the idea is the same. Find inspo pages on Instagram to get started altho I have to say, I had to narrow mine back down again or I’d get a bit overwhelmed with ideas and end up paralysed by choice 🤣

Go for an eclectic style then, it doesn't have to match.

WetBandits · 16/09/2023 15:43

Depends on your definition of ‘Instagram house’!

I follow various TikTok accounts of beautiful, whimsical houses. Pinks, yellows, greens on the walls, mismatched colours, etc. I love it, and DP is happy to let me do whatever I want with the house as long as he can do whatever he wants to the garden 😁 works for me!

My favourite TikTok home account is happyenchantedhome 😍 absolutely not everyone’s cup of tea, but I feel like I would be so happy and relaxed there.

nobodysdaughternow · 16/09/2023 15:50

Don't even think about what you will bring into the house, before you have taken the unnecessary, undesirable and duplicate items out.

Which is usually about 80% of the shit we own.

And then identify your favourite colours and stick to them.

frozendaisy · 16/09/2023 15:52

Declutter
Paint a couple of rooms you will feel much better.

Buy a couple of cushions you like as stand alone cushions, that feel nice and are pretty most colours go with most colours.

Angrymum22 · 16/09/2023 15:57

I r just had new windows and doors fitted. I love my front door, it’s blue, which apparently is the new grey. I’ve recently had new loose covers on my sofas, again blue. But the rest of the house is a tip.

Most Instagram houses are lovely but they are houses and not homes. I have two friends who live in beautiful houses. One is a Georgian but is sterile, dark and full of statement stuff but it doesn’t feel like a home. The other one is a beautiful Georgian farmhouse that has all the same features but it is light, chaotic and lived in. Both reflect the personalities of the owners one is old money the other new money. No prizes for guessing which one is which.
When a house feels like a home it is so much more comfortable. I always think that minimalism suggests that you can just about afford the mortgage but you have no money left to furnish it.

Lilyoverthevalley · 16/09/2023 16:30

If you want an Instagram worthy gallery wall just cheat, there a lots of websites where you can buy sets of prints that "experts" have decided match together. Look at a website like Desenio. You can just pick a colour pallette and it will have a selection of gallery walls you can buy. Then just pay a handyman to put them up in the exact arrangement it shows on the website.

Also if you see something you like on Instagram, like a cushion, just copy them and buy it! They'll probably give a link because they'll get a percentage from your purchase.

Deathbyfluffy · 16/09/2023 16:33

I’d probably start by not wanting your house to be ‘suitable’ for an over-rated social media platform full of shallow idiots.
Give me a well-loved, lived in home any day

CharlotteStreetW1 · 16/09/2023 16:36

How old is your home OP?

IGuessNotThen · 16/09/2023 16:36

They’re not real

NooNakedJacuzziness · 16/09/2023 16:37

They've probably all got a cupboard of shame like Monica's in Friends

PepsiMaxLime · 16/09/2023 16:55

How about a different style/theme in each room if you can’t decide on just one OP?

It doesn’t have to match but if you go for things that you like, it tends to generally match. On my walls are pictures we’ve found when we’ve been places or from local artists. I tend to buy 3 prints from the same artist and keep that one artist to one room. Or put up a gallery wall with photos.
