Salted or unsalted butter for fruit crumble topping

Having made a crumble for years, but tonight is the night!

Every recipe I look at is different. What would you use salted or unsalted butter. I'll probably just mix granulated sugar and flour with it.

Unsalted for sweet things

Salted for me.

I use salted for everything

Salted always. And in fact I add a bit of extra salt to offset the sugar in the crumble.

Cheeesus · 15/09/2023 10:55

I use salted for everything, because that’s what we have in the house.

Wisterical · 15/09/2023 10:56

Salted, always. Many cakes and other sweet bakes benefit from a good pinch of salt too.

BarnacleBeasley · 15/09/2023 10:58

I use unsalted so I can choose how much salt to add.

CornedBeef451 · 15/09/2023 11:05

I always use salted for pretty much everything as if I buy unsalted it ends up in the butter dish by mistake and causes disappointment for days.

Gurthnamuckla · 15/09/2023 11:06

Salted. I almost never bake with unsalted, and unsalted butter on good bread is criminal.

AmandaHoldensLips · 15/09/2023 11:08

Salted, and add an extra pinch of salt. Seriously. It makes a HUGE difference.

Magenta82 · 15/09/2023 11:09

Salted, or whichever you have to hand, if you use unsalted then you will need to add a bit of salt anyway.

mindutopia · 15/09/2023 11:45

Either would be fine. I often go for salted for baking as adds a bit more flavour, depending on what it is.

SquashPenguin · 15/09/2023 11:48

I use unsalted, but add some flaked almonds on top too 😋

Blanketpolicy · 15/09/2023 11:49

salted

Even in the good old days of baking with stork margarine mum always added a pinch of salt to baking. Think it was included in many recipes.

SoftSheen · 15/09/2023 11:49

Either will be fine, but I usually use salted.
