Pretty sure the Evri courier has stolen money from me…

I made an agreement with the dustbin cleaner that I would leave his money on top of the gas box because I’m usually out when he comes. For whatever reason he just hasn’t been taking the money lately, almost as though he’s altruistically cleaning my dustbin! I felt very guilty about it so today I made sure to stick a note on the side door letting him know the money was there. It was £12.50, a £10 note and £2.50 in coins which I placed on top of the note to weight it down and I also placed two small pebbles either side of the note for further weight. It isn’t windy here today anyway fwiw, checked my weather app and it’s 6mph so barely anything.

The note hasn’t blown away basically and the coins are still in situ, as are the pebbles but the note has gone. I have a ring doorbell so can see exactly who enters my driveway and the only person who has today so far since I placed the money there is the Evri delivery driver. He went around the back of the house to deliver the parcel to my shed so will have seen both the note on the side door as well as the money on the gas box as he walked past. It can’t be anyone else at all, no one else has access to this area without passing my doorbell and as I say, he’s the only person who has.

I’m really angry about it. I contacted Evri but it’s just a robot who promised someone will get back to me about it, not hopeful about that! Is there anything else I can realistically do? I know I can’t get the money back and I’ll have to find somewhere else to bloody leave it in future. I live in a trustworthy area so honestly had no qualms about leaving the money there. We had the same Evri courier for years who was great but he recently moved areas and the new guy just hasn’t been very good for a few reasons. Didn’t expect he’d steal from me though!

Pretty much everyone here uses one, it’s really popular. We had maggots in the bin one summer which was pretty vile so started paying for one then and it works a treat.

It wasn’t in an envelope but a crow didn’t take the note, of that I am fairly certain although it’s a nice theory. I’ve obviously learnt my lesson now so will find a safer place to leave it in future. It wouldn’t usually be so much but the cleaner hasn’t been taking it lately so it’s built up! Usually just £2.50 which the Evri courier evidently wouldn’t have been bothered about taking…

I don't know where my answer went! Ghostly - same as your tenner...woòo. I had written how much I also wanted a bin cleaner...they don't exist around here. If I were enterprising I would set up a service tonorrow, jack in my awful job, and jnvest in a karcher and some Marigolds. In fact, I have both. [Ponders]

You should consider it! The guy I use does pretty much all the houses around here. I’m in a small village but I know he does most on this estate and it’s £2.50 a bin so I imagine he does ok. He has a transit van so maybe invest in one of those too Wink.

You left money, out in the open... what a stupid thing to do.

For all you know a bird took it, the crows round here love collecting things.

Sidebeforeself · 14/09/2023 17:05

And I presume he’s not paying income tax ? Are you ok with that ? Cos that’s just as outrageous as stealing a tenner ( if anyone did)

Evrilittlehelps · 14/09/2023 17:05

Ok, I get it I’m stupid. I’ve learned my lesson and won’t be leaving it there anymore. Still pretty sure it was the courier rather than a crow or cat but it’s ultimately gone so doesn’t matter now I guess.

Love my dustbin cleaner.

Ever since the hideous maggot incident I will not be without them. You walk by my dustbins on a fairly narrow path to my front door and it is so nice for them to smell so clean!

I pay monthly by direct debit.

Don’t have a clue, never stopped to ask the guy about his tax returns.

Yup, this is why we started using one! Maggots everywhere one summer, absolutely vile.

No, I don’t really because a lot of people are cash in hand still. Market stall holders, a lot of handymen, some nail salons, even some hairdressers insist on cash.

It's likely all of these are also not paying what they should which is the only real reason a business operates solely cash in hand these days to be honest.

No we don’t.

I don’t live alone but everyone else was out of the house before I put the money out this morning.

The wind was slower than my average running pace this morning so I really don’t think a note in a garden with high fences that was weighted down with stones and coins blew away but ok.

Oh blimey, I thought the government said every council would collect food waste by 2023.

I guess if the government said it that could mean anything! Yeah, the bin would get maggoty in this heat I guess.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 14/09/2023 17:15

Was it the EVRI guy? Yes, most likely it was - but you can't prove it so unfortunately you're just going to have to chalk it up to experience (and not leave money lying around outside in the future).

Im far more worried about the 466 BILLION quid Amazon not paying taxes than Jim the bin cleaner who makes £9.99 hosing out bin juice and maggots once a fortnight.

LlynTegid · 14/09/2023 18:11

Contact the company you bought the goods from. Make it clear to them that they must use a different delivery company for you in future.

The law should require you to know who the parcel delivery company will be, before you pay for any goods ordered online.

LittleObe · 15/09/2023 09:01

Yeah don't leave money out OP. We've had couriers come to drop off parcels in our flat building... and rip open the parcels already there and take what they fancy.
