Pretty sure the Evri courier has stolen money from me…

I made an agreement with the dustbin cleaner that I would leave his money on top of the gas box because I’m usually out when he comes. For whatever reason he just hasn’t been taking the money lately, almost as though he’s altruistically cleaning my dustbin! I felt very guilty about it so today I made sure to stick a note on the side door letting him know the money was there. It was £12.50, a £10 note and £2.50 in coins which I placed on top of the note to weight it down and I also placed two small pebbles either side of the note for further weight. It isn’t windy here today anyway fwiw, checked my weather app and it’s 6mph so barely anything.

The note hasn’t blown away basically and the coins are still in situ, as are the pebbles but the note has gone. I have a ring doorbell so can see exactly who enters my driveway and the only person who has today so far since I placed the money there is the Evri delivery driver. He went around the back of the house to deliver the parcel to my shed so will have seen both the note on the side door as well as the money on the gas box as he walked past. It can’t be anyone else at all, no one else has access to this area without passing my doorbell and as I say, he’s the only person who has.

I’m really angry about it. I contacted Evri but it’s just a robot who promised someone will get back to me about it, not hopeful about that! Is there anything else I can realistically do? I know I can’t get the money back and I’ll have to find somewhere else to bloody leave it in future. I live in a trustworthy area so honestly had no qualms about leaving the money there. We had the same Evri courier for years who was great but he recently moved areas and the new guy just hasn’t been very good for a few reasons. Didn’t expect he’d steal from me though!

I don’t know when the bin will be collected. The bin cleaner tends to come shortly after it has been emptied but I never know when this will be because it changes week to week. It could easily have been when I was out in the morning or again when I’ve been out this afternoon, hard to predict. Usually I’m at work, just haven’t had to go in much today because students aren’t back as yet so just went in for a couple of hours. I felt guilty because he hadn’t taken the money for weeks and I owed him a backlog so I wanted to make sure he was paid this time. I don’t have contact details for him else I’d just have sent a quick message rather than leaving the note on the door.

Anyway, we’ll have to agree to disagree on the note blowing away in the non-existent wind. I don’t know why he wouldn’t also take the coins but he didn’t.

You have no idea who stole it.

If anyone! My bet is that it'll turn up somewhere random and OP will be too embarrassed to update the thread.

Why does your bin need professional cleaning every month? How is it stinking so badly if you bag your rubbish before binning it?!

It’s just something most folk do round here. In the summer months it does start smelling despite all rubbish being bagged, just one of those things.

So you have no idea when the bins are emptied as it changes week on week but somehow magically your bin cleaner seems to know. This all sounds very odd.

Doubtful. I hunted through the garden twice and it hasn’t turned up but maybe.

It isn’t the crown jewels but it’s still my hard earned cash!

No, the day stays the same (every other Thursday) but I don’t know what time because that constantly changes.

How on earth do you have no contact details for this bin cleaner who is quite possibly not declaring his income if you can't pay him in any other way but cash on hand... he sounds a lot dodgier than the Evri bloke you've decided is clearly guilty.

Also he didn't take the coins because he didn't take any of the money. That's why they were still there.

That you waste on a bin cleaner you don't need but OK you do you.

It’s £2.50 a month and I don’t personally think it’s a waste but we’ll agree to disagree.

Personally I would always leave money in an envelope with Mr Bin Cleaner's name on( and not on top of the bin, either.

Thanks for the thread though, fascinating that someone or several people have found a niche in domestic services.

So why leave it outside? He'll knock if he's interested in collecting it 🤷🏻‍♀️

He cleans the NDN’s bins on both sides and AFAIK most of the bins around here so I just asked him one day ages ago when I saw him and he said he’d add me to his books. It’s always cash only with those sort of things ime. He doesn’t seem dodgy and he didn’t come to my driveway to take the money this morning and then come back later to take it again, he wasn’t on my doorbell unlike the courier…

It was on top of the gas box around the back of the house, back garden is fenced off too so enclosed. I didn’t just pop it on top of the bin in the street Grin.

He doesn’t knock anymore because I’m not usually in. If I am in then I’ll most often open the door when I hear him dragging the bin back up my driveway and I’ll pay him that way. It’s rare I’m in to do this though hence the gas box arrangement I’m definitely now changing!

How does the Evri courier access your back garden?

It isn’t locked up but it’s enclosed so other people can’t see into the back garden and you can’t access it without passing my ring doorbell. He was the only person who entered my back garden today hence the belief it was him.

Put the money in an envelope and tape it to the inside of the bin when he's due
(I assume your Jim is empty if he's cleaning it 😊)

Isn't your ring doorbell near your front door? Totally confused now 🤷🏻‍♀️

A cat or other animal probably dislodged it from under the coins and then it blew away. More likely than the Evri bloke taking the note and leaving the coins still in place.

No, it gets emptied and he cleans it soon after so the money would most likely end up in landfill if I did this sadly!

Well, I’m not doing a MN diagram but you have to pass the doorbell to get to my back garden because you have to walk up my drive to get to my back garden and the doorbell is positioned in a way that picks up anyone or anything moving on my driveway.

Oh I 100% don't think it was the Evri driver. Could it have been taken by a nesting bird? OP I'm assuming you live alone so no one else in your home could have brought it in suspecting rain or something?

toomuchforonewoman · 14/09/2023 16:48

It could have blown to Bognor Regis by now, what a ridiculous thing to accuse someone of. More fool you for leaving notes out in the elements. The breeze can pass your doorbell and into your back garden you know. Doorbells also don't pick up wind. Stupidest thing I have ever heard in my life.
Hope someone who needs it finds it.

Why is your landfill bin so dirty? Do you not have food waste collection where you are?

No we don’t.

I don’t live alone but everyone else was out of the house before I put the money out this morning.

The wind was slower than my average running pace this morning so I really don’t think a note in a garden with high fences that was weighted down with stones and coins blew away but ok.
