Pretty sure the Evri courier has stolen money from me…

I made an agreement with the dustbin cleaner that I would leave his money on top of the gas box because I’m usually out when he comes. For whatever reason he just hasn’t been taking the money lately, almost as though he’s altruistically cleaning my dustbin! I felt very guilty about it so today I made sure to stick a note on the side door letting him know the money was there. It was £12.50, a £10 note and £2.50 in coins which I placed on top of the note to weight it down and I also placed two small pebbles either side of the note for further weight. It isn’t windy here today anyway fwiw, checked my weather app and it’s 6mph so barely anything.

The note hasn’t blown away basically and the coins are still in situ, as are the pebbles but the note has gone. I have a ring doorbell so can see exactly who enters my driveway and the only person who has today so far since I placed the money there is the Evri delivery driver. He went around the back of the house to deliver the parcel to my shed so will have seen both the note on the side door as well as the money on the gas box as he walked past. It can’t be anyone else at all, no one else has access to this area without passing my doorbell and as I say, he’s the only person who has.

I’m really angry about it. I contacted Evri but it’s just a robot who promised someone will get back to me about it, not hopeful about that! Is there anything else I can realistically do? I know I can’t get the money back and I’ll have to find somewhere else to bloody leave it in future. I live in a trustworthy area so honestly had no qualms about leaving the money there. We had the same Evri courier for years who was great but he recently moved areas and the new guy just hasn’t been very good for a few reasons. Didn’t expect he’d steal from me though!

<Really want a bin cleaner, who knew?>

Pretty much everyone here uses one, it’s really popular. We had maggots in the bin one summer which was pretty vile so started paying for one then and it works a treat.

It wasn’t in an envelope but a crow didn’t take the note, of that I am fairly certain although it’s a nice theory. I’ve obviously learnt my lesson now so will find a safer place to leave it in future. It wouldn’t usually be so much but the cleaner hasn’t been taking it lately so it’s built up! Usually just £2.50 which the Evri courier evidently wouldn’t have been bothered about taking…

I said in OP but will reiterate. Placed the coins and 2 small stones on top of it which were still on top of the gas box. Isn’t a windy day here at all either, it hasn’t blown away.

Can't trust anyone these days, I doubt without CCTV you'll get any decent response from Evri unfortunately.

gamerchick · 14/09/2023 14:31

Sorry OP it's a stupid thing to do. Yes it's a bit victim blamey but there's a reason we don't send money in the post or hope people are honest in any other way when it comes to cash.

Find another system. Our bin cleaner comes back later on.

Evrilittlehelps · 14/09/2023 14:33

I have learned my lesson so will ask next time he’s due if he can collect it in the evening or find some other system to pay him. I don’t know if the courier would have even noticed it had I not added the note to the side door, I reckon he saw that and thought he’d take his chances. Possibly thought we’d be out all day so I’d be none the wiser.

Nice, I don’t really want to go near the wheelie bin so am willing to pay £2.50 a month for someone to do it for me Wink.

If he is desperate enough to risk his job for a tenner, then personally I would turn a blind eye to it.

I'm so confused...what is a bin cleaner? I mean, it's self explanatory, but is that really a thing?! misses point of thread

Yes it is really a thing. My elderly neighbour hires them. I'll just stick to cleaning it myself and save my money though😁

HaddawayAndShite · 14/09/2023 14:43

If he really stole the money he would have stolen all the money. Think about it, if he’s so desperate for money he’s willing to risk his job for a measly £10, why wouldn’t he take the coins?

Evrilittlehelps · 14/09/2023 14:45

Honestly not a clue. Maybe only the note was worth it to him, didn’t deem the coins worthwhile. Who knows? There’s no other reasonable explanation though. The coins and stones were relatively unmoved so it didn’t blow away and I really don’t think a bird swooped down and stole it, as nice an alternative as that would be.

OP posts:
Evrilittlehelps · 14/09/2023 14:48

If it was blowing a gale outside and the stones and coins had been knocked down, I’d be inclined to believe the theory it had blown away but it isn’t and the coins and stones were still there. I thoroughly searched the back garden for a sign of it first, I haven’t just jumped to the conclusion he’s stolen it for no reason. It’s the only realistic explanation. No idea why he wouldn’t want the £2.50 as well, some people don’t care for coins in the way they would a £10 note I guess.

Will you say anything to the Evri driver if you see him again?

He doesn’t seem to knock, he prefers to just leave it in the safe place which is fine but it means I don’t really interact with him. If I see him delivering one in future, I might have to ask what he spent it on.

I just don't think your Evri driver stole a £10 note from on top of your bin. He'll have to come back to your house the next time you order something online. It would be an incredibly stupid thing to do for so little gain. Sometimes things get lost and end up in weird places. This is so much more likely. Have you looked in/under the bin and all over your garden. I bet it turns up.

Extensively hunted through the garden. I thought it was a stupid thing to do too but he doesn’t know our household routine like the old delivery driver did so he probably thought we’d be out all day and I wouldn’t be any wiser because I’d just gather the bin cleaner had taken it when I got home.

That is just full on nasty.

Be a shame if your parcels started to go to the wrong address.

How does the Evri driver know you have a bin cleaner? I don't think this was some highly orchestrated plot from him!

I left a note on the side door to my bin cleaner saying where the money was, as explained in OP.

Surely if he wanted you to think the bin cleaner had taken it, he would have taken the coins too.

YourNameGoesHere · 14/09/2023 16:10

Honestly it's more than likely blown away even if it's not that windy that's more logical than the Evri bloke taking just the note and not the coins. If he was going to steal it, he'd take the lot.

I'm just confused as to why you bothered leaving it out in the first place if you were in pretty much all day today.

AliOlis · 14/09/2023 16:14

Why does your bin need professional cleaning every month? How is it stinking so badly if you bag your rubbish before binning it?!

MrsSamR · 14/09/2023 16:15

We're also talking about a total of £12.50 - only £10 of which is missing. Is this really worth a Mumsnet post? It's hardly the Crown Jewels.

Evrilittlehelps · 14/09/2023 15:49

You have no idea who stole it.
