No, she can’t read Grin

No, but balls are easy come, easy go in this house. She loses one, she finds another soon enough Grin

No - he know which one is his (we use tennis balls). You can't fool him if he loses it in a bush and you find a different one.

But other dogs can?

DustyMaiden · 13/09/2023 19:58

I taught my dog to read when I was a child. I had a sign that said good boy chocs and another that said no treats. He always knew which one to choose.

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/09/2023 20:02

No way will I be writing her name, on her 20 tennis balls.

Houselamp · 13/09/2023 20:06

No, we lose as many as we find so we always have at least two.
If it disappears in a bush then its a gift for a dog who is less of a wuss about walking into bushes

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 13/09/2023 20:10

No my dog can sniff his ball out from an entire field. We were going to meet a friend once and I happened to ask him “where’s [friend’s name]?” So he got all excited, dropped his ball and went running to the gate. I couldn’t be bothered to find it for him but on the way back he sniffed it out straight away!

SirChenjins · 13/09/2023 20:14

No! The dogs in our neighbourhood have a finders keepers approach to balls - you win some (Kong squeezz), you lose some (Poundland)

Numbersarefun · 13/09/2023 20:16

No - he can’t read!
However he always knows which is his ball because it smells right.

MajesticWhine · 13/09/2023 20:16

I have a ball-obsessed spaniel. If I omit to bring a ball with us on our walk, he will find one somewhere in the bushes without fail and insist on bringing it home. And no I haven't written his name on any of them Grin

Ascendant15 · 13/09/2023 20:18

No. But if you do, I'll know where to return the 3,000 balls I have in the garage. If I lived near a golf course I could make a fortune.

Aye! 😁

My dogs have some balls that are personalised. A friend of mine had them done for us with their names and photos. 😂

Do you happen to know where your friend got them from? They'd make ideal presents for my friend's dog - she is what inspired my question. It's never once occurred to me to write my dog's name on his ball, but friend's dog's balls are all nicely labelled :)

That reminds me of DD2, when she was about 6, making a sign for the cats for the bathroom door "Cats not allowed in here" as they would go in and shred the loo roll and make a mess. She did put the sign at cat height, which was considerate.

I remember explaining that cats can't read. "Oh!" she said. "When will they learn?"

Bagofcrisps · 13/09/2023 20:54

My dog has come home with his new favourite ball, from outside the police station.
I'm so glad there's no name on it. We don't want some badass, ultra trained German shepherd coming here, demanding his ball back. 😀
