Florida for the weekend - stupid idea?

clpsmum · 13/09/2023 17:12

There is an event in Florida two of my children really want to go to. The only way we could do it would be to fly out on Friday and back on Monday. I've not been long haul for many many years. Is it a stupid idea or is it doable? I'm in the UK

Terrible idea imo flight plus airport clearance would be very long

BackT · 13/09/2023 20:59

I've been to the Caribbean for 3 nights.

Was fine. Didn't really have jet lag as such as never really got into a routine. Loved it actually.

The plane will be going there anyway

Such a depressing thread

CapturedLeprechaun · 13/09/2023 22:04

Definitely do it. At their ages, your kids can power through the tiredness, and the adrenaline will keep them awake. Hope you have the best time. Let us know their reactions after you tell them at Christmas!

God there are some miserable buggers around here.

BirdiePlantaganet · 13/09/2023 22:14

We, like most people we know, think nothing of a weekend in New York or Boston (I am not saying we do it often, but we have). Florida is barely any further so I would do it in a heartbeat. Our kids always have had a great ability to sleep all the flight home from the USA, so they're not even tired.

MiniBossFromAus · 13/09/2023 23:02

Crackers. I got my arse kicked on MN about flying to the UK from Aus for 8 weeks to see my family after Covid - my Dad having been diagnosed with cancer.

I was really grilled about the environmental impact. Then this thread - everybody is saying rock on for 4 days!!

Quartz2208 · 13/09/2023 23:36

I would fly into Tampa then which is a fairly easy airport to clear and then you are nearby.

Posting on MN about flying anywhere always runs a risk of encountering someone's wrath.

Just because you were on the receiving end of it (unreasonably so imo) doesn't mean OP wanting fly to Florida for a few days is wrong.

@clpsmum Go for it! I have done similar and didn't regret it for a second.

passiveaggressivenonsense · 14/09/2023 08:01

As your DC grow up in a world vastly changed and savaged by climate change they can remember the absurdity of how their parent's generation just did not care enough.

You realise in 6 months they’ll be saying next years RR will be even better, a must see event 😋

Yeah. It on six months my 17 year old might not want to go with me

Yeah fuck it. My one flight in twelve years will cancel out all the good we do for the planet.

Seriously why do people like you come on threads to police them and just be horrible.

I really don't understand the amount of knocks OP is getting about her impact on the planet if she goes ahead with this.

There are hundreds of threads on here where people are moaning about the lack of sunbeds/crap food/unbearable hotel guests whilst on their week in the sun annual holiday, yet nobody says to them "Don't you care about the planet"

The only difference here is that the OP has said they haven't flown for 12 years - I wouldn't be surprised therefore, if their footprint is a whole lot less than that of some of the people she is getting a bashing from.

clpsmum · 14/09/2023 08:18

@PoshPineapple thank you. Unfortunately think a lot of these people just come on to try and make others feel bad.

We did Florida for a weekend about 12 years ago for one of my husband’s best friend’s wedding. He was groomsman. It was a pretty brutal schedule, arrived - slept, then out for a dinner. Next day we relaxed during the day, then rehearsal dinner, the following day was the wedding and went home the day after that. I think it was Thursday to Sunday. We felt fine there but on our return felt pretty rough all week (no children involved - they were with grandparents).

PNDshame · 14/09/2023 08:28

My ex lived out there and when we were together I would very often fly out fri-mon. Never got jetlagged as I wasn't there long enough, and would get 3 full days there with a late flight home on Monday, and back in work Tuesday.

Crazy, yes, but totally doable. Plenty of people do Vegas or nyc for the same amount of time

billyt · 14/09/2023 08:33

There was a time the we could only do weekend breaks due to restrictions caused by my wife's health problems. We did the usual Paris/Rome/Brussels etc. but as we weren't sure if we would ever go further we looked at NY.

We did NY (twice) and Washington. Flew out first flight on Friday and flew back on the last flight on Sunday. Very tiring but as long as you pack things in (it's only a couple of days, anyway) it's very do-able.

@clpsmum Get booking and have a great time.

Sd352 · 14/09/2023 08:49

It’s doable. I have flown to New York and the Midwest for a weekend for weddings and to India for a long weekend (usually flying out Thursday night, back Monday morning or similar) and it’s totally fine.

I think the jet lag doesn’t really set in, especially if you are running on adrenalin.

Mademetoxic · 14/09/2023 08:57

If your flight is delayed by a few hours, then you're basically screwed.

Comedycook · 14/09/2023 09:18

Just ignore. Honestly it sounds so exciting... something they will remember forever. There are billionaires and celebrities flying all over the world in private jets. Stop making ordinary people feel bad for taking an occasional flight.

Superfood · 14/09/2023 09:26

I can't make any sense of your posts.

In June you posted:

Yea everyday. I'm over my overdraft limit constantly and have no savings and just cannot make ends meet

yet you're also posting about buying a new car and flying 3 people to florida for the weekend. What happened between june and now to change your life from constantly over my overdraft limit and can't make ends meet to can easily fly 3 people to florida and buy a new car?

which bit is true?
