Florida for the weekend - stupid idea?

There is an event in Florida two of my children really want to go to. The only way we could do it would be to fly out on Friday and back on Monday. I've not been long haul for many many years. Is it a stupid idea or is it doable? I'm in the UK

It's 5 hour time difference, so that aspect isn't actually too bad, especially when there. We don't really ever have much issues when going there. Only when we get home, but only for a day or two usually. But if have work the day after landing, we just get in with it.

What are the event timings?

13y and 17y would probably be fine whilst there. Would they need to be doing something on the Tuesday when home or would they be able to have a couple of hours nap, get up and push through til bedtime?

No they could catch up on Tuesday I wouldn't send them to school

I’m going to be really annoying but what are the family circumstances that are stopping you from having a holiday?

Will this event be on again at a different time when you can go for a week or 2?

If you’re paying for flights and a weekends accommodation then you can save a bit more and go for a bit longer.

My dream is to go to Florida and it’s paining me to hear that you’ve not had a holiday in 12 years and you’re going all that way just for one weekend!!

Is there no way you can’t make it into s holiday or go at a different time?

My brother recently went to WWE in Fla (he lives out there). Said it was AMAZING. Royale Rumble will be epic I'm sure. Enjoy!

I'm excited now too lol!

Thanks everyone xxx

If it is an event on the Saturday I would really advise booking a flight out on the Thursday incase you are delayed.

clpsmum · 13/09/2023 17:51

@GoryBory I have a disabled child who could not and would not want to travel all that distance. That is the longest I could leave him for. I don't want the other two to miss out either though. Life has been exceptionally tough the last few years so I feel like they deserve a really amazing treat

Hope you all enjoy it. Please factor in the Immigration Control - 2.5 hours when I last went, & nearly missed my connecting flight.

helpyhelperton · 13/09/2023 17:56

Have an amazing time. Hope all the travelling goes smoothly. Let us know how it goes!

purpleboy · 13/09/2023 18:00

I doubt you'll even notice jet lag, you're not really there long enough to get acclimatised. What a fun experience, something you'll all look back on fondly for years to come.

Doopydoo · 13/09/2023 18:06

Sounds like a fantastic treat for your kids, one they will never forget.
Hope you all have a brilliant weekend.

Ahh ok that’s fair enough then.

I would definitely take them and if possible try and go for a long weekend or have the flights are early/late as possible.

I would also make a plan and try and fit as much as you can in.
If possible you could even spend one day at one of the theme parks.
Take a neck pillow each and hopefully
they’ll sleep the entire way back anyway.

I would double check that your passports are all in date too as some places won’t accept it if it’s got less than 3 months on it.

Eeeekk!! How exciting for you all 😁😁

BackToOklahoma · 13/09/2023 18:10

You’re going to have a great time OP. I used to love the wrestling when I was a child. Really fun atmosphere and your kids will have the added adventure of travelling far from home. Good for you. 😊

JE17 · 13/09/2023 18:11

Have a fantastic trip OP. I would do it too in your circumstances - your DC will remember it forever.

TinaYouFatLard · 13/09/2023 18:13

USA only require your passport to be valid for the duration of the stay but you musn’t forget to sort out your ESTAs in advance.

purplecorkheart · 13/09/2023 18:14

I would go. Sounds like it is something they would remember for a lifetime.

I did similar for a trip to the US. The day before I went I took an afternoon nap. I dozed that night but not sleep. Flight was a morning flight and I slept for an hour or two on it. Landed and was busy touring till 9pm, went to bed and slept all night. On return red eye flight slept 4 hours on flight and 3 hour on train home. Was home for 4pm and stayed away till 9pm. Slept well that night and got up at 8am.No Jet lag. Took a bit of planning but sleep schedule worked for me (and I struggle with sleep).

Bootsandbooks · 13/09/2023 18:14

It’s doable - the adrenaline will keep you all awake, and plenty of people do New York / east coast US (Boston, Washington etc) for short-term business trips. I think you will feel quite tired and possibly crash once you’ve returned back to England! But absolutely go for it - sounds fun and like an experience :)

watchingsmurfs · 13/09/2023 18:17

I’d go for it! It will be that fun adventure that you talk about forever more. The kids will probably handle it better than you will.

faban · 13/09/2023 18:19

I would- you'll be tired but it won't be forever! What's the event? Great that they're both into it! Go for it they'll never forget it!

KenAdams · 13/09/2023 18:20

Note that the people saying not to do it haven't actually done it.

I have with my child and although I wouldn't choose to do it every day, it was fine.

Glad you've decided to go - have the best time!

faban · 13/09/2023 18:21

Ah just caught up, lovely op enjoy!

watchingsmurfs · 13/09/2023 18:22

Oops, posted before reading your update. Great news OP! Have an amazing time!

DJSteves · 13/09/2023 18:26

Time your flights to maximise the time. I've just come back from a four day stint in Boston. Mid morning flight will get you there mid afternoon on the Friday. So Friday will be long but I'd push through and try and get a decent kip. You should be good then for the rest of the weekend. I'd aim for a teatime flight to get you home for Mon morning. Your body clock will think it's early hours when you get back. My best tip? Nip to CVS for melatonin and take it while you are there. We had no issues with jet lag.

Roselilly36 · 13/09/2023 18:28

No way would I consider it. Florida is a 14night trip as a minimum for us.

tanstaafl · 13/09/2023 18:38

You realise in 6 months they’ll be saying next years RR will be even better, a must see event 😋

jays · 13/09/2023 18:44

That’s so exciting you’re even considering it! Absolutely! That’s a total adventure and something you’ll never forget that you done! I love it! I’d do it!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 13/09/2023 18:53

I'd do it! Good for you, OP.
