Fruitflies - should I be embarrassed?

I have a clean house, it’s immaculate, and I’m very serious about food hygiene, but I don’t panic if I see a few fruit flies hovering over the fruit bowl when it’s warm (I like my fruit really ripe so view them as an occupational hazard). But apparently, according to someone who I thought was a friend, I’m the most unhygienic person alive for not getting rid of fruit before it ripens to prevent them.

Now we’re talking about, at most, 4-6 flies hovering over some fruit during the worst of the heatwave (unfortunately it was on the day friend decided to visit). I got rid of the fruit and the flies went away. I’m really angry friend felt the need to comment as I don’t feel like it’s a big deal but not sure if I’m being unreasonable.

Best to get rid if you can, they seem to multiply very quickly. But no, you've done nothing to be ashamed of.

They're inevitable with ripe fruit!

It's them or the fruit... that's really all there is to say about it.

You'll no doubt get people now spouting apple cider vinegar solutions, but is that really something you want in your house too?... it smells, and is a spillable pot of liquid.

Sounds like your friend needs to get a life and some manners tbh.

we keep a net cover over the fruit bowl to keep the fruit flies under control. but don't be embarrassed - fruit is always good.

Surely the appropriate response to that is er, OK and move on with the convo
