Love my house but hate living here

Last year we moved into a cottage owned by PIL. It’s a bit of a weird layout but basically a house with a flat underneath it. We live upstairs, and PIL rent the flat out as a holiday home.

The house is very old and charming. But the walls are thin and you can pretty much hear everything. When the DC (6 and 3) run around, it sounds like thunder in the holiday flat. If people talk loudly, you can understand their conversations.

The noise from holiday makers doesn’t bother me. But the noise we make bothers some of the holiday makers, and a few have left bad reviews ( other people have said it’s ok and not to worry, but they are probably being polite).

I really try to keep the kids quiet- we go out a lot, and if we’re at home we stay on the upper floor. But this is our home, and I feel like I can’t relax.

The plan is to eventually buy the house off PIL. I really love the place and when there are no holiday makers it is the perfect home.

There are currently people staying, and I’ve been counting the days until they leave because after there is no one staying until half term. However this morning someone has spontaneously booked for next week and I felt like I want to cry.

DH says to just relax, it’s our home and we are allowed to make noise. I don’t want to walk on eggshells anymore.
