How much time do you get off for Christmas?

No reason for me asking really, I'm just curious. All of the jobs I've had I've only ever got a couple of days off (Xmas day and boxing day) but I'm going to be starting a new office job and looking forward to having a bit more time off over Christmas.

I'm interested to know, what is your job/industry and how long is your Christmas break?

Ours closes between Christmas and New year, but you have to use three annual leave days for those (Bank hols cover the other days).

We close half day on Christmas Eve, but don't have to take leave for that, it's gifted.

Council.

LittleLlama · 12/09/2023 18:49

Office Worker - we close for the week! (Have to work extra during the year to make up the time).

OddBoots · 12/09/2023 18:53

Office work here, we get the Bank Holidays and can negotiate other days using annual leave as we would any other day.

Mammyloveswine · 12/09/2023 18:53

2 weeks but I'm a teacher so it's standard!

7Worfs · 12/09/2023 18:56

No extra days off given, however I always use lots of A/L and usually bugger off around mid-December and come back on 2Jan.

It's the biggest perk of my job. University admin. We close from around the 23rd each year, sometimes earlier depending on when Christmas falls and don't reopen until the first working day in January.

Same for me, so lucky! Also we get 5 days off over Easter too. The generous leave is the biggest perk of the job :)

PureAmazonian · 13/09/2023 15:01

Nothing.

ShadyPaws · 13/09/2023 15:10

Motor trade
Christmas Day, Boxing Day, NYE and NYD

TheBewilderedGoblin · 13/09/2023 15:14

Zero, unless I take annual leave. I get public holidays, but don’t necessarily get to take them on the public holiday dates.

I work as a journalist; TV and radio news and newspaper require people working antisocial hours, it’s part of the job.

itsallnewnow · 13/09/2023 15:17

Work in law and use annual leave for a 2 week break sometimes get the Monday off too coming back if it's the bank holiday after new year!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 13/09/2023 15:18

None. I work in a 365 business so I'll be assigned shifts and sometimes they fall on the key days. Annual leave is like gold dust.

tokennamechange · 13/09/2023 15:19

Public sector -as long as you want, but it just comes out of your normal leave allowance (apart from the BH which are on top), other than the afternoon of the 24th which is a discretionary extra half day (although has been the case for at least 20 years so can't imagine they ever would not give it!)

There isn't any restriction you could work every day or none of them. The office is officially closed though so no calls from the public.

MinnieMouse0 · 13/09/2023 15:20

The usual four bank holiday days then however much annual leave you’d like to take!

Any firm I have worked at has given an unofficial half day on Christmas Eve provided you didn’t have annual leave booked that day.

RampantIvy · 13/09/2023 15:24

From Christmas Eve to 2nd January. TBH I dislike having all that time off at Christmas. The weather isn't great and I don't have small children to provide childcare for.

Darklane · 13/09/2023 15:25

None, farmer

@Loverofoxbowlakes it is a HR role. I don't know the exact arrangements regarding Christmas time off but I'm assuming it's more than just Xmas and boxing day. In all my other jobs the HR staff never worked between Christmas and new year

Been in HR for 20+ years and never had more than BHs off. Always needed some level of cover in the office. And I’m always on call on the days we are off.

Christmas Day, but could be working up to midnight that day

alltoomuchrightnow · 13/09/2023 15:35

Retail.. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, which is a lot for me. .in other retail it ws only Christmas Day

RandomUsernameHere · 13/09/2023 15:39

The bank holidays, then annual leave can be used for any more.

Dogsitterwoes · 13/09/2023 15:42

Public sector and we shut down between Xmas and new year with a few unlucky people having to work to cover any emergencies.

Previous job no shut down at all, even had to work Christmas Day one year.

2 jobs before that closed the bank holidays only.

ChristopherTalken · 13/09/2023 15:43

Every office job I have had is closed between Christmas and New Year (not part of your annual leave allowance either).

Before DD I would work Christmas Eve as it was a total doss and we always left early for the pub. Same with the first day back (normally the 2nd or 3rd of Jan)

SunflowersAndSmellyTrainers · 13/09/2023 15:45

We usually close early on Christmas Eve and get an extra day tagged on for the new year - not expexted in between xmas and new year.

Ascendant15 · 13/09/2023 15:50

We get the bank holidays and are forced to take three days annual leave between Christmas and New Year unless we are an essential service (public sector).

Maximamam · 13/09/2023 15:52

I previously worked in gastronomy so often had to work over Christmas, I would only get one of 24/25/26 Dec off. I absolutely hated it, Christmas is my favourite time of year.

I now work in a school (not a teacher), so get 2 weeks. I appreciate it so much, and almost have to pinch myself that I can finally have the Christmas I want!

DH company close down over Christmas so he finishes the Friday before Christmas and goes back on the first working day.

AuntieMarys · 13/09/2023 15:52

Dh gets 3 days. Back at work on 27th. Off NYD.
