How much time do you get off for Christmas?

No reason for me asking really, I'm just curious. All of the jobs I've had I've only ever got a couple of days off (Xmas day and boxing day) but I'm going to be starting a new office job and looking forward to having a bit more time off over Christmas.

I'm interested to know, what is your job/industry and how long is your Christmas break?

@Loverofoxbowlakes it is a HR role. I don't know the exact arrangements regarding Christmas time off but I'm assuming it's more than just Xmas and boxing day. In all my other jobs the HR staff never worked between Christmas and new year

Varies - I have worked primarily in the voluntary sector with one or two private sector. Almost without fail the voluntary sector organisations have had a full office shutdown - we had all the days off between Christmas and New Year without having to take leave; one we even had we had the 24th off as well (and Maundy Thursday - I think reflecting its church-based origins).

Other jobs we have been expected to work between but in the main people 'work' from home on those days. I followed the advice of my colleagues which was to send some emails at various times so it looks like youre working.

One year I actually went into the office and there was only about five people in out of the normal 200. The office was based off Oxford Street in central London and so I had an extended lunch hour in the shops looking at the sales. And then I unfortunately had to go home early as I was last in the office and the IT guy was only there because I was there and he wanted to go home. What a trauma!

Close on Christmas Eve until new year, but I always take off at least a week beforehand.

I bloody love Christmas.

PinkRoses1245 · 12/09/2023 15:50

I work at a uni, the whole place shuts between around 22nd/23rd Dec and 2nd Jan - such a perk! And it doesn't get taken out of our annual leave allocation.

greyhairnomore · 12/09/2023 15:51

Zero - nhs

Coolblur · 12/09/2023 15:52

None. I work in the travel industry, my workplace never closes. But we get the bank holidays added to our annual leave allowance, so that's better overall for flexibility. I might get lucky and get Christmas day off if it falls in my rostered days off.

gogomoto · 12/09/2023 15:53

Depends on how much I book, I get statutory days plus book between Christmas and New Year usually. Sometimes I book 2nd Jan too

DappledThings · 12/09/2023 15:53

Quite a lot of us university folk on here.

We get 2 or 3 days at Easter as well, always the Wednesday of Holy Week and the Tuesday of Easter Week, so the long weekend is always extra long. Sometimes the Tuesday of Holy Week too, it depends how many days Christmas has been.

Uterusbegone · 12/09/2023 15:53

Bank holidays only, anything else is just booked as holiday, I usually take it all off apart from being on call one day (the most senior in the team have one day 'on call' for the 3 days between Xmas and new year, unless there is someone not taking holiday)

In a previous org they closed over Christmas so a mandatory 3 days was taken from everyone's holiday entitlement at the start of the year

rainbowsparkle28 · 12/09/2023 15:54

Social care. Only bank hols unless you book annual leave off, even then annual leave requests are all collated amongst the whole team of who wants what time off to ensure enough coverage before they are authorised.

piscofrisco · 12/09/2023 15:56

2 days. Christmas Day and Boxing Day (or two extra days if they fall on a weekend).

Yes we get an extra day at Easter and also one after the Aug bank hol too. So 5 extra days in all (sometimes 6). Added to the 32 days annual leave plus bank hols it’s not too shabby.
Shame about the rest of the shite! 😂

Sommerled · 12/09/2023 15:57

4 days public holidays (the 2nd is a public holiday in Scotland 🙌) then I take annual leave to take 2+ weeks off.

ohtowinthelottery · 12/09/2023 15:58

Dh and DS both finish on 23rd and return after NYD (or the Bank Holiday). DH works for a charity, DS for a Local Authority. They have to take the days from their annual leave.

Not necessarily, if other people are working there is usually someone in HR available in case of problems, they just won't necessarily be in the office (I'm an HR Director)

SirenSays · 12/09/2023 16:02

Two weeks!

Whitewolf2 · 12/09/2023 16:11

I work for a large consulting firm and we close between Christmas and New Year, it’s counted as a company holiday, not annual leave. I’m always grateful for it as I’ve run out of annual leave by this point!

fiddlesticksandotherwords · 12/09/2023 16:12

My workplace shuts down between Christmas and New Year and we get the bank holidays, but the rest has to come out of holiday entitlement.

AperolWhore · 12/09/2023 16:14

Typically finish around the 20th December and back on the first working day in Jan.

Fortunately I’ve never had to work the days in between as I’m Mrs Christmas and always saved holiday days in previous roles to book Christmas off.

BooksAndHooks · 12/09/2023 16:18

When I worked in an office as part of the building trade we closed from the Friday before Christmas for 2 weeks.

Currently I get 8 days for Christmas.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/09/2023 16:27

Just the bank holidays - although we can request to take additional annual leave. Some staff are on term time contracts so get all school holidays off - which does impact the number of other staff who can take leave at this time . However- I was term time myself when DS was younger so I tend to just take bank holidays now to enable colleagues with younger children to take the extra time if they wish .

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 12/09/2023 16:28

However much annual leave we want to take plus bank holidays. We provide 24/7 service and I usually volunteer to be on call.

LostThestral · 12/09/2023 16:30

22nd December to January 2

MardyMcBlowdry · 12/09/2023 16:35

I'm an Allied Health Professional but work a term-time only contract, so I take the same holidays as the local authority schools.

EquallyDetermined · 12/09/2023 16:37

Office job here, just the bank holidays, anything else comes out of annual leave. I've only ever had one job where this wasn't the case. There was one site where there was shutdown from Christmas Eve to 2nd Jan but it was taken out of your annual leave allowance.
