9/11 - what happened to the planes?

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:48

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

I'm not sure why people think it's more grisly to ask the question than sit and watch a load of videos of it all happening. It's an emotive topic OP, but you've had an unfair pasting on here and some posters has been unnecessarily nasty.

HorseyHorsham · 12/09/2023 12:50

For the other two planes, the fuselage remained recognizable. There are overhead photos on the net.

Have reported the bullying going on here.

OP - asks question.

Some Mumsnetters - answer question, provide links or places to follow up.

Other mumsnetters - omg!!! How thick are you??? Really??? Research? On Mumsnet???

@myyve Asking questions is always good, at every stage of your life, for any reason whatsoever. And on this topic or any other tragedy, recent or ancient.

Agreed.

adriftinadenofvipers · 12/09/2023 12:50

I'm sorry but if you are 'researching'... isn't it pretty obvious what happened?

I remember everyone thought the first plane might have been an accident. Was watching in horror online in work with colleagues when the second one struck. It was horrific.

The two planes that hit the twin towers became part of that debris afair. They didn't "come out the other side". This place in now a memorial to all.who lost their lives, including resuce workers.

Im.not sure about the other plane - it crashed I think, brought down by passengers in a non city location to save lives?

And the 4th plane landed, the terrorist takeover failed?

Oh my god, I had no idea there was a 4th plane.

Why don’t you just use google and educate yourself? Why are you so helpless? It’s really odd.

I'm not helpless in the slightest. I just would rather have a conversation so things that come up can be discussed.

Eve223 · 12/09/2023 12:51

This has to be one of the most appalling, sickening and upsetting things I've seen on MN.

In very poor taste and timing, @myyve. Why didn't you do do your 'research' elsewhere online instead of coming onto MN to speculate on the horrific details?

So not research, idle musing?

I don't know why everyone is having a go at the OP. The answer isn't self-evident for all the planes at all, at least one did land!

OP asked What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers?

So specifically those planes.

What an awful thing to say. You shouldn't be in such a profession.

ask your tutors to recommend resources. If your project actually matters then don’t trust a forum or wiki.

Four planes crashed, two at The Twin Towers, one at the Pentagon and United 93 (the one where the passengers fought back), which crashed near Shanksville.

There is a piece of steel from The Twin Towers at Duxford

pickledandpuzzled · 12/09/2023 12:54

It isn't obvious. We saw it, sat thunderstruck, listened to news, watched news, heard updates- we processed it gradually over years.

OP hasn't done that. To her, it's history.

The events of that day were unimaginable and incredibly hard to process. You watch the videos and wonder what you saw.

The titanic hit an iceberg- but behaved completely differently.

Aeroplanes are massive, it's hard to imagine them simply disintegrating on impact.
Buildings are massive. It's hard to imagine them simply collapsing.

The whole thing is beyond imagining and processing as you see it.

Don't give her a hard time because you are traumatised by the event.

Athenas · 12/09/2023 12:54

What sort of case study are you researching that you need to know this?

You must have missed the Miss Marples on the Nicola Bulley threads and all the other freaks who get off on murder victim stories.

Oh for fuck's sake, it happened nearly 25 years ago. There's plenty worse things happening right now in the world. Can no one ask a question about them either?

No need to be so rude, and it’s only 22 years ago

I watched a documentary not that long ago about the incorrect ID of a man who'd jumped out of a window.

It was fascinating and went into detail about what the man was wearing, what the man who'd been IDd was wearing, where they were, how it could be one particular person and not another. It had repeated photographs of the man in various stages of falling.

I recommend it to those who keep telling OP to go and watch stuff because it's far more gruesome than her simple question asked on MN.
