9/11 - what happened to the planes?

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:48

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

It amazes me how many people claim they saw the second plane strike live, but unless they were watching Sky News that wouldn’t have happened. The BBC didn’t break into programming until that days episode of Neighbours had finished about 2.20pm BST which was was after the second plane struck and the realisation it wasn’t a tragic accident.

I would swear I saw the second plane live on BBC news 24.

Frequency · 14/09/2023 09:30

I was at work when it happened and an announcement came over the tannoy telling us all to put the radio on (there were no TVs in the building) and I just remember a lot of confusion and disbelief, even from the radio presenters. No one seemed to really understand what had actually happened.

Once it became clear it was a terror attack we were all allowed to go home as some workers had family and friends in the US.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 14/09/2023 09:56

The false memory happened with Hillsborough too - people said they saw it on TV in shop windows etc but they didn't, because the match wasn't televised.

I guess that maybe the recorded footage was played along with commentary from someone who was watching it live, so that affects the memory. Also, even if you didn’t see it as it happened and had been told a plane had gone into the second tower, you probably weren’t able to process it without the visuals, so it might have felt like learning about it for the first time?

I can’t recall precisely, I had a day off work that day and was at the gym - saw it on the TV screens but I had no headphones and it was before smart phones, so I rushed home to put on the TV. I remember as I walked through the streets I could see lots of people talking to each other in disbelief and they were all using their hands to mime planes flying into towers. It was surreal.

MeadAndPie · 14/09/2023 10:34

BBC News 24 is a rolling news channel - digital not terrestrial channel so more limited access at that time but if Sky was showing news live I'd expect news 24 might have been as well - no idea if they did but would be odd if Sky News was and they weren't.

PP was talking about BBC programming being affected - neighbours would have been BBC1 or BBC2. There are some scheduled programs now on news 24 not sure if there were then but it would have likely followed any breaking news story over any thing else.

So you have memory issues but also people having access to different sources some of which would have been live.

I was at school and didn't hear until after the second plane hit, but my parents were retired rolling news addicts - they definitely would have had sky news on if they heard about the first plane. Which they probably did, because rolling news addicts.

If it was shown live on sky news I'd say loads of people saw it.

ColleenDonaghy · 14/09/2023 10:43

I had a quick look on YouTube, couldn't see sky footage but this CNN footage of the second plane hitting is there. It's interesting how long it takes them to realise what has happened, I guess it was just so unthinkable at the time. When you watch it knowing what we know now, it's startling that at first they seem to miss the second plane.

HuwEdwardsBottom · 14/09/2023 10:48

@enchantedsquirrelwood my mum is one of those people who insists she watched Hillsborough happen live and gets quite irate when anyone points out it wasn’t being shown live, and the footage we see was actually recorded by the BBC for Match of The Day. Strangely she did watch most of 9/11 unfold live as she always finished work at lunchtime and would watch Neighbours religiously.

Princessbananahamock · 14/09/2023 10:53

Op try national geographic I can’t remember where I watched it but it was more of an engineering type documentary on why the towers collapsed so quickly lots of computer generated videos showing the impact the planes hitting caused on this. I found the program fascinating it shows future engineers I suppose how to place fire exits better and safety for people in this tall buildings. If I remember the title or channel I’ll post it.

Many News channels were broadcasting live, it was certainly on CNN.

I clearly remember several colleagues and I watching in horror and shock on the tv in our mess room at Gatwick Airport and then watching the towers collapse.

BookAddicted · 15/09/2023 05:45

That’s exactly why OP should do the case study. Lots to learn about the subject

BBC programming was changed, as far as I remember. We were due to get a taxi at 3 pm and switched on the tv just before and it was on by then. I don’t remember whether we saw the second plane hit live, but the towers falling I do remember.

CaveMum · 15/09/2023 06:53

@HorseyHorsham, assuming you were in the UK, if you put the tv on just before 3pm you won’t have seen the second plane hit live. The plane struck the South Tower at about 9.05am local time, which was 2.05pm in the UK.

The South Tower collapsed at 9.59am (2.59pm) with the North Tower collapsing about 30 mins later.

That looks like an incredible useful site - I hope the OP is still reading despite all the negativity directed at them and sees it.

The match wasn't televised but the disaster was. I watched it.

I can't stand football, I was in the kitchen with the radio on and the news started with reports of a pitch invasion, then they realised it was more serious.

I went into my living room and put the TV on and the snooker was interrupted to show the footage.

@HuwEdwardsBottom Your mum is right.

The match was being shown live on TV in Ireland though so that is another possibility.

That “want to know” website looks like a conspiracy theorist paradise 🙄

That "want to know" link looks like a site for conspiracies and misinformation. It includes phrases like "The September 11th attacks were likely meant as a cover-up for financial crimes" and other offensive suggestions.

Please don't head there for sensible information and truth. It's deeply upsetting and disrespectful to survivors, the bereaved and all who continue to grieve and suffer as a result of that day. Thank you. x

It is. I reported it but for some reason, MN decided to leave it up.

Perhaps they're part of the conspiracy. 😂

Completely agree!! Not sure if there’s an agenda on 9/11 by the poster but I suspect there is a broader one across the whole site.

FlySwimmer · 15/09/2023 11:18

@CaveMum @REP22 @MissConductUS I also reported it but it’s still there. A conspiracy theory & disinformation rabbit hole.

I've reported it too. It's upsetting. Personally, I believe the rather beleaguered OP of this thread was genuinely looking for information, albeit in a way that didn't perhaps come across as intended. I'm glad that MN kept the thread up and going, for the OP and others with questions. But pointers to conspiracy threads (the one concerned, as well as the "9/11 Cover-Up" section also features "Mind Control", "JFK Assassination" and "UFO Disclosure" chapters) are misleading at best and distressing/extremely dangerous at worst.

if the news stories it links to are legit then surley the evidence stands on its own merits?

but if the links to the various news outlets eg bbc ect and reports from former officials etc then how can that be any different than reading articles in eg daily mail etc ?
