9/11 - what happened to the planes?

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

I was watching sky news live,, and I remember the female presenter (can't remember her name now) commenting that we can see a helicopter in the background there, before realising it was another plane when it got closer and smashed into the 2nd tower.

There’s a very good book about 9/11 called ‘102 Minutes’. That’s all it took, from hijacking’s to the towers collapse. Shocking really. Some of the eye witness accounts make for grim reading. I didn’t realise people survived at the impact zone in the South Tower and manage to get out, they got into a lift the doors closed and the plane hit at that moment. They then had to get out and climb over rubble and human remains. I also didn’t know that the NYPD and FDNY didn’t work together and in fact there was bad blood between them. They didn’t communicate or work together at all during the attack. A police helicopter was circling the towers and the crew could see the buildings looked unsafe and thought they may collapse. They radioed for the information to be passed on to the fire brigade so they could be aware and evacuate but it wasn’t passed on. Many fire fighter lives could have been saved if this had happened.

It wasn't just the rivalry between the police and fire services, they also operated on two completely different radio systems that didn't communicate with each other. Furthermore, it was widely known for many years that the fire department's radios didn't work well in large steel buildings like the WTC. After the 1993 bombing the radios were upgraded but were so crap they reverted back to the old system. There was a booster system inside the WTC that should have strengthen the signal but this wasn't working following the collision. This meant that many first responders in the North Tower never heard the order to immediately evacuate after the collapse of the South Tower.

I recently read the book Fall and Rise and the amount of mistakes that were made that day are shocking. The communication between air traffic control, the military and NORAD was extremely poor with no one able to take overall control. Many of the hijackers were selected for extra security screening but that just meant holding their luggage back until they boarded the plane, never mind the multiple box cutters that they were armed with.

@myyve not sure if anyone’s told you but this thread has now made American news! Huffington Post!

Efacsen · 13/09/2023 15:52

@TattiePants wasn't there also Intelligence that al Qaeda were planning something like this which wasn't acted on??

Now you’re going to be mocked for not reading the thread…

Yes but mostly from Americans who are shocked anyone on earth isn't familiar with the details of their history, yet most know very little of European Asian or African history. They still call it the day the world changed. Horrific as it was it changed absolutely nothing where I'm from.

As you would expect all the inter agency problems and of course a lot more of course gets covered in a tremendous lot of detail here:

DivingForLove · 13/09/2023 16:30

@toadasoda that’s incredibly disingenuous - 9/11 didn’t just affect the States, people from about 60 different countries died, it had a huge impact on many millions across the world. It’s world history not American history (contrast with the Oklahoma bomb which was more localised).

DivingForLove · 13/09/2023 16:32

Well unless you live on the moon of course it changed your life! Racial tensions, ISIS, terrorist attacks all over the world, loads in Europe, mundane stuff like flying became so much more complex and stressful. I honestly can't comprehend someone saying it didn't affect them, it literally DID change the world.

Bit naive.

Tell us where you’re from, and I’m pretty sure someone will point out a way something changed that day.

It would be quite impressive if you can come up with a corner of the globe that wasn’t affected at all by the events of that day.

Efacsen · 13/09/2023 15:52

Blame was laid on the handover from Clinton to Bush and the gap in driving the “civil servants” (not sure of US equivalent) who form the bulk of intelligence operatives (at all levels). I think the intelligence was there, it wasn’t collated properly or acted on.

Elleherd · 13/09/2023 17:32

notimagain Parts of the 9/11 commission report are seared on my brain. Not least the FDNY chief resorting to a bullhorn and going to all the staircases and bellowing "All FDNY Get the fuck out!" down them. I don't remember if it was there or elsewhere I found out about the 80 (I think) lift engineers who decided to walk away knowing people were trapped in lifts. The exception was a local Otis engineer who ran to help and sadly died.

Yes there were some truly horrendous communication errors and difficulties that day, and some are well beyond 'mistakes were made,' But I hope people will also hold in mind that in middle of that and despite it, the decency and huge courage of those uniformed or not, who persisted in trying to save others.

Very much agree.

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards?

I guess you missed the massive fireball when they hit then?

Obviously. God help us that anyone could think anyone walked or flew away from that. 🙄

REP22 · 13/09/2023 18:10

I am really sorry to see that the DM (and others) picked up this one. @myyve - I hope you are OK.

What has been interesting to me is that there are two or three posters on this thread (myself included) who had direct involvement on September 11th 2001, either being there themselves or having loved ones there. As far as I can tell, none of us were particularly offended by the question asked in this thread, nor the desire for greater understanding. But the rage, offense and indignation expressed by others who have given the OP an utter pasting has been quite sad to witness.

Without questions there can be no answers. And what seems obvious and easily-obtainable from a wide range of sources to many, may not occur to everyone and it is right that they should feel able to ask their questions where they feel they might learn a helpful answer, be that on news sites or on Mumsnet. @myyve, if you would like to ask any questions privately, please feel free to PM me. I will be happy to answer if I am able to.

I hope that you don't take all of the harsh words levelled against you to heart. Best wishes to you. x

It's Mumsnet Bingo! Someone has made a gratuitous anti-American comment on a thread about 9/11.

Well done.

Just out of curiosity, how much do you know about American history?

There also such a thing as faux innocence and MN (esp AIBU, Chat and F:S&GD) sees an awful lot of it unfortunately, and people who have previously given their time and energies in good faith sometimes - and understandably - feel a bit jaded.

The people who've actually given their time and contributed aren't the 'jaded' ones. The jaded ones are the ones who've rightly been reported and deleted. Nobody needs to hear them or read their sanctimonious judgement.

This board isn't the province of the righteous, it's a chatboard and I'm heartily sick of the faux concerned posters berating the OP about not being able to research. They added nothing but pointless clutter.

Anybody with a braincell who perceives faux anything, moves on without wasting their precious time further.

Hawkins0009 · 13/09/2023 18:44

there are many theories' on that day, as for the truth, the whole truth one would presume that would be in the various intelligence service's files. @myyve

Reassuring to see parochialism is alive and kicking in some quarters.

Ostrichbraid · 14/09/2023 09:02

Honestly, i think all the people who think it's a stupid question could be set the task of writing a paper dealing with what, exactly, happened to those planes.
All that I've seen is the images of the planes hitting the towers, and the vast ball of smoke. I've wondered too, and googled a bit out of curiousity. It's as if they literally just disappeared.
Some of the links shared on here and some of the well presented explanations about what happens under those circumstances have been very interesting and i have learnt a lot.
The outrage at the question seems very misplaced seeing as so many people are keen to point out how they themselves know all about it having watched documentaries/looked at pictures/studied videoes/discussed with other terribly clever people on Appropriate Forums.

Frequency · 14/09/2023 09:04

A lot of people on the DailyFail thread, American and otherwise, don't even believe the planes existed. I'm not so sure that they have the right to mock anyone's intelligence.

@myyve I hope you're okay. A lot of bored and bitter people have access to the internet. Pulling others down is the way they pull themselves up.
