9/11 - what happened to the planes?

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:48

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

@Spirallingdownwards I really don't know what more I can say to make it up to you. I've apologised deeply so many time. I truly am sorry for your loss, and hope you are keeping well. I am contemplating quitting the course as I must say, my confidence has been greatly knocked here. I am not stupid, I just didn't know the answer to this particular question. I have never had any studies or lessons surrounding this topic before. I'm 6 days into a new course.

I'm learning. I'm sorry.

This is a 23 year old adult not a schoolchildren who may genuinely not know. I am intrigued what type of course has allowed someone on to study engineering without any basic knowledge whatsoever.

There are engineering apprenticeships, BTECs and access courses.

It's nasty to point out that someone claiming to not understand what happened when planes hit the buildings or ploughed into the ground is winding people up? Or to not be able to look it up properly?

Why would she spend time looking it up when someone on mumsnet can explain it more easily?

She most likely tried looking it up but it didn’t have the specific answers she was looking for.

Did you get this offended when people were asking how the submarine imploded and what happened to the bodies of the victims?

These are valid questions.
Just because you know the answers, doesn’t mean everyone else does.

Look at the footage not just the "stills" it makes it clearer but your brain has difficulty comprehending the sheer size of it passenger planes are MASSIVE the twin towers were huge it doesn't look "real" you can't comprehend where the plane "went"

I agree with this. I was watching live as the second plane hit, I was so shocked. It is hard to describe how impossible it seemed and how traumatic it was to see the tragic events as they actually happened. I thought my friend might be in the building (he wasn’t) and I was frantic with shock and worry. DH came home from work, it was all surreal. A beautiful sunny day, with all this death and destruction.

JanesBlond · 12/09/2023 15:19

Don’t be discouraged @myyve , no
one knows everything especially at the start of the course. I’m sure you’ll look back at the end and be amazed at how much you’ve learnt. Don’t give up!

I didn't know that about MJ!

Seth MacFarlane was supposed to be on Flight 11 (the first plane to hit the towers) but was late for the flight because his travel agent typed the wrong time.

Things like this blow my mind.

MissConductUS · 12/09/2023 15:20

This is what happened to the aircraft that hit the WTC. Parts of the plane can be seen at the 9/11 museum. I'm a New Yorker and I saw the second plane hit from about a mile away.

https://exhibitions.nysm.nysed.gov/wtc/recovery/aircraft.html

When the two Boeing 767s crashed into the World Trade Center, fireballs, wreckage, and plane pieces ejected from the towers. Large pieces of the planes, such as an engine and landing gear, were discovered blocks from Ground Zero.
Weeks later, police detectives, FBI agents, and firefighters continued to search through the wreckage for human remains, personal objects, and any clues relating to the terrorists. They desperately wanted to locate the planes’ flight recorders. Each plane had two "black boxes"—a cockpit voice recorder and a flight data recorder—located near the tail. Recovery of any black box would have provided investigators with information on the final minutes of the doomed planes. Posters inside the tents offered various pictures of what the flight recorders could look like if they survived. After almost a year of combing through Ground Zero and the Fresh Kills facility, the staff found some plane pieces, but none of the black boxes. An expert on aircraft construction was on site to help with the identification of the plane parts.

The 4th plane where the passengers overpowered the terrorists most certainly did not land safely. The terrorists realised that they were not going to make it to their intended target so they deliberately crashed the plane into a field in Pennsylvania. There's a memorial there to the passengers and airline staff who lost their lives there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Airlines_Flight_93

Because I assumed it would be about whether wreckage had been found and examined and not the ridiculous and disrespectful question it turned out to be.

None of which gives you the right to disparage the OP and accuse her of 'taking the piss'.

@myyve

OK, some top tips:

  1. If you strongly suspect something is an ignorant question, don't ask. Look it up. If you can't find an answer anywhere on the entire of the internet, that's probably because the question is too stupid, or too obvious.
  2. Research - social media is not research. Youtube is not research, unless you are using it for footage of something actually happening (which you could have done in this case, to be fair), or unless it's a reputable source (recognised expert on the subject, first hand narrative, or presenting properly researched material). Familiarise yourself with the uni library, and with any websites that collate studies/academic articles for your subject. Look at the sources for everything you read. If there aren't any, or they're crap, then the thing you are reading has not been validated.
  3. Common sense - have a look at logic exercises, or reasoning activities. Try and do a small amount every day. Brain training to think in a more practical way is helpful for everyone, but would be really helpful if you want to be an engineer.
Angrycat2768 · 12/09/2023 15:24

OP Im not sure whether some of the irritation about the question is because there have been conspiracy theories that either 9/11 didn't happen or it was something other than planes crashing into the building (US government/Mossad etc) because 'Where is the plane wreckage?' that may upset people. If you watched the events happening, as I did, there is no doubt they were obliterated in a fireball.

Access programmes at universities are literally designed to deal with "zero knowledge" mature students. Where I studied, each year was described as a "stage", so fresher year was "stage 1". Access year was "stage 0".

Learning to ask questions properly is part of Access programme study.

You have apologised more than enough, you didn’t need to apologise in the first place.

Check out the resources you’ve been given, keep up your research and ignore those attacking you. And please, never stop asking questions. Everyone learns by other people telling them stuff, whether that be by asking questions, reading resources, being in a call, watch a tv programme etc. if you don’t know, ask. That’s how life works. People on here saying you should just know this stuff are being goady.

Good luck with your course, engineering is a wide ranging and fantastic profession.

GoryBory · 12/09/2023 15:25

Do not apologise OP and do not let this put you off your course.

There would be no point doing this course if you knew everything there was to know about it already.

Never feel ashamed or embarrassed to ask questions as I promise you that if you have a questions, others would also have the same questions.

There are peoples whose job it was to search the remains and ask questions and have people ask them questions to determine what happened (which happens in all incidents).
The families and friends were also asking lots of questions about how it happened and why etc.
None of them were disrespectful.

Well done you for not taking the easy route and joining a course that you are going to learn lots from.

And well done for being brave and admitting you don’t know something and asking questions.

Just asking the fucking question in life, ignorant or not.

Maybe not, there was nothing about it in their primary. My eldest gave up history but my youngest is currently doing it for the junior cycle. I know as of yesterday when I asked my youngest about it that it hasn't been mentioned, but I'll check out the history book later.

But looking at this online it says this is what's covered for the junior cycle.

Yeah it must not be taught where you are, cause it was taught in both primary and secondary schools here

JemimaTiggywinkles · 12/09/2023 15:28

OP, ignore people who think they know your motives better than you do - they're wrong (and arrogant).

I haven't read all of the posts (too many dickheads to wade through) but it is worth considering the design of different vehicles. Road vehicles, such as cars, are specifically designed to hold up well during head-on collisions because those sorts of collisions are really quite common on roads. However, for aircraft head-on collisions are very rare (at high speeds particularly) so they aren't designed to hold up well in those cases.

For the "just google it" dickheads - I specifically refuse to google terror attacks because I don't want to see video footage of people being murdered. The same info can usually be found via a different means (such as asking on a general forum to get an idea of what websites might give accurate info). There are plenty of people who would think choosing to watch the video for no good reason is pretty disgusting in itself.

Finally, the "its history how can you not know?!" group - I'd bet good money there is plenty of history that you don't know either. Aside from school (where recent history often isn't taught because it takes time to get things on the curriculum) people tend to follow their interests. You may personally have been interested in 9/11 and its political impact, but others may be more interested in British colonisation and that ongoing impact.

MeadAndPie · 12/09/2023 15:28

There are shows that look at aircraft disasters -

Air Crash Investigation was on UK TV at one point - it was good people working hard to track down what had gone wrong - or what chain of events- to avoid in future.

Channel 5 has another program
https://www.channel5.com/show/air-crash-disaster-revealed - haven't seen that one but might give general background.

The plane that was headed for the White House was United Flight 93. Passengers did attempt to take over the controls, but the plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing all aboard.
