9/11 - what happened to the planes?

myyve · 12/09/2023 11:48

Thinking on from that awful day after the anniversary yesterday, one thought has come to mind.

What happened to the planes and those onboard, once they were flown into the twin towers? I know this probably does sound silly and I'm so sorry if it comes across as ignorant, but I truly do not know, and the internet doesn't mention anything, either..

Did they come to a crash landing afterwards? Or did they continue flying? What actually happened to the plane and those poor souls on board?

Saying you were only 2 when it happened is not exactly an excuse for being utterly clueless about the biggest act of terrorism in history.

My son was 2, the other not born. But they would be well able to describe what happened that day, and certainly what happened to the planes and their occupants.

Mine weren't born when it happened. My eldest would know some of it, my youngest doesn't care.

They have no interest in it and that's fine. They do know about other world events or disasters etc. that they were taught in school or that they have an interest in and read about, watched documentaries about or discussed with me.

Some historical events just don't capture certain peoples attention, even if it was the biggest act of terrorism in history.

I can get very obsessed with certain things that happened in history and read and watch everything about them but then there's other things which could be arguably bigger and I have no interest.

To be honest this has been really tough to read through. My confidence has been hugely knocked. I don't think this career path is going to work for me.

Don't be disheartened, OP.

You've done nothing wrong! You're researching and asking questions, that's positive.

It is very difficult to process the damage that was caused, I can completely understand why you were struggling to comprehend the physical effects of what happened.

To watch the footage and see huge, solid planes knowing they were full with passengers just become nothing almost instantly is horrific to imagine. I can see why anyone would wonder exactly what happened.

Asking questions is fine - though this may not have been the best forum to do so near anniversary date.

Many of us answered your initial question though and have tried to point you to other sources of information - it's not very clear exactly what you need - a general understanding or more TBH - but I'd have thought they'd be documentaries on TV around now and books/ accounts out there many linked to that could help you.

Please get this thread deleted OP. @myyve It’s made my tummy churn and it’s like you wanted people to speculate on the deaths.

I agree with this entirely. I am going to hide it now, but unfortunately it stays in 'trending.' Hmm

@myyve please don't let mumsnet bullies change your choice of career. Honestly, I've seen other people ask innocent questions on here and be pulled apart. I don't understand why, but it does happen on here a lot x

JoBrodie · 12/09/2023 13:48

I think the ~5m video here captures the horror of the events as they unfold.

There's video footage of the planes hitting the towers, and the towers later collapsing, and of the military tracking another aircraft that was deliberately crashed. You'll also hear from air traffic control and phone messages from passengers calling to tell their families that they love them https://www.tsa.gov/videos/911-events-unfold-0

In this video, from 1m you can see and hear footage of the first aircraft crashing

Both planes had been in flight for about an hour and still had plenty of fuel so they hit the towers with considerable weight and speed and were pulverised in the process, then the fuel tanks exploded.

Wikipedia has really good pointers to primary sources of information and context (shouldn't use Wikipedia itself for citing in your assignment but it cites references that you can use) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_11_attacks

This isn't the first place I've looked. I have researched as much as I possibly can, and have seen some of the footage and articles. There is little information as to if the planes pass through the other side so I did assume not, however I wanted to check. That is all I meant by this post.

@myyve You SAY you have researched as much as you can and you SAY you have seen the footage. You have therefore seen the planes fire bomb into the building and not come out the other side and land - as you ask in your first post. Perhaps some more 'research'. You could try it out with a toy plane and a little model building and smash one into the other and see what happens then try to imagine that being huge and faster and with fuel on board.

I find you question quite offensive considering you have 'researched' this as much 'as you possibly can'. 😢

@myyve

OMG re-read what you have asked! Seriously a great big plane flies into a building at speed and you ASK what happened to the planes! Rethink as a missile loaded with fuel (with people on board) at speed firing into a building.

Fire, explosions, death, dust, devastation.

Or perhaps in Barbie land they go through the building and emerge the other side and land quietly in a field somewhere and the people all get off without a scratch!

Would you speak to OP like this in person?

FastAndLast · 12/09/2023 13:51

Nah it’s a good research idea, asking people on a website, 99% of whom weren’t on the scene when it happened and have only seen video footage themselves, what happened to the planes and the people on board.

Erdinger · 12/09/2023 13:51

TenOhSeven · 12/09/2023 11:53

How could anyone seriously think that a plane would crash into a skyscraper and then just continue flying?

Exactly

myyve · 12/09/2023 13:39

To be honest this has been really tough to read through. My confidence has been hugely knocked. I don't think this career path is going to work for me.

Because you said you were 'researching' but couldn't find anything online, and people pointed out asking here wasn't research?

I'm not sure what career you're planning to go into, but I guarantee you will not have a natural talent for every single aspect of it. Nobody does, for anything.

When you find your skills lacking in an area, don't quit! Work to improve those skills!

FindPirate · 12/09/2023 13:52

You don't need to have been an adult at the time to know if you throw an egg at a window hard enough to break the window, it's also going to break the egg.....? Surely basic common sense and gcse level science would have this one covered...?

MonicaPluto · 12/09/2023 13:52

@HuwEdwardsBottom

I know kids today who are fascinated by 9/11 and know lots of about it. Age is irrelevant.

Yes but others aren't, so what?
Others can be more fascinated with other parts of history....or science or whatever else captures their attention.

myyve · 12/09/2023 13:55

As I've tried to say so many times before here, I am truly very very sorry for causing any kind of negative emotion or upset. It really wasn't my intention.

To clear up, again, what I meant when asking this question;

I know the plane made impact with the buildings, however there is little to no communication as to if the plane actually traveled through the building and emerged on the other side, before plummeting. You see the plane hit the twin tower(s) however you then see a large plume of smoke and I was unsure as to if this was the entirety of the situation, or if the plane did emerge the other side before it was engulfed in flames.

As other posters have also mentioned, it's hard to envision something of that size not just gliding through and out of the other end of the building.

I was 2 when it happened, so no I didn't see the footage. I am actually asking as research for part of a case study I am working on. Not just for the hell of it, or because I want to know the morbid details. I am sorry again for asking. I just couldn't find any further information on this online.

I’m not piling on or anything but I’m genuinely confused as to how you haven’t seen the footage, or learned more about that day.

I was 5 when it happened, and I could write a book on it. It’s impossible, in this day and age, to not know nearly everything about it.

myyve · 12/09/2023 13:56

@Eve223 mumsnet have a presence on this post. They can also see that I have been a long time poster, never before have I ever been accused of trolling. This is a genuine question.

I mean if there's no definitive footage online and you've researched as much as you can online I have no idea why you think anyone on MN would have anything further to add- very strange post.

Nothing about the op is positive. A researcher, who asks on Mumsnet what happened to the planes... on Mumsnet of all places, when the actual videos of what happened are freely available for all to see is ridiculous. A primary school child would research more effectively.

HuwEdwardsBottom · 12/09/2023 13:58

OP you can see from the footage it doesn’t come out the other side of the building. It’s just a huge fireball. Parts of the planes were found. Seats, some of the landing gear, but they mostly just exploded on impact.

Then perhaps leave the thread and don't click on it again? There are many threads that churn my stomach just from the title. I swerve them. Not difficult.

SundayCherry that is a disgusting thing to say.

FastAndLast · 12/09/2023 13:58

No, physics and everything else, there was zero possibility of the plane hitting a building like that at any speed and being able to fly through the other side. None.

AllOfThemWitches · 12/09/2023 13:59

What horrible replies. There's absolutely no need. I have a very, very unscientific brain and am constantly asking my physics genius son ridiculous questions, which he patiently, but often in hysterical laughter, answers me.

Same, it took me until my teens to understand how gravity works. My brain isn't built for science or maths.

WimbyAce · 12/09/2023 13:59

I am not sure what you would think could happen if a plane crashed into a tower apart from the obvious. Weird thread.

Handsnotwands · 12/09/2023 13:59

i think i understand what you are asking, it's that planes are huge, did huge parts of planes drop to the ground around the towers? and yes, in part that did happen. The towers were themselves huge, there were massive explosions so they, and the remnants of the planes were a huge pile of rubble.

i was about 18 at the time, and have to say i just did not grasp the enormity of what was happening. i remember taking a call at work and the person i was speaking to said "the twin towers are collapsing" i didn't really know what the twin towers were, or grasp the loss of life, let alone the reasons for it, and implications. the world was a much bigger place in those days. we had one computer in that office that had internet access.
