Do facial injuries get referred to Max facs?

I had a facial injury recently. I was surprised that they referred me to max fax for stitches, rather than doing them themselves in A&E. I followed their instructions. Apparently the stitches are smaller, but tbh I couldn't see a big difference between them and A&E stitches. Seemed like a fuss for nothing!

Maxfac surgeons are experts in the many tiny muscles, veins, arteries and nerves in the head and neck. Maybe the a&e doctor felt that a specialist was needed?
