How to retrieve old email account. Help please

OK. I have an old gmail account. I cannot remember password for. I contacted google and was told something was already signed in.
I can make no sense of this.
Help.

Do you have another email account that you linked at the time? If so, try resetting the password and a link should be sent to that account.
