Has anyone ever watched an André Rieu concert?

The audience look like they're having such a good time.

Presumably they've been drinking all afternoon as there are quite a few years too.

It's on Sky Arts at the moment...

I am loving the comments. Again like many I have only ever seen the man on Sky arts. A few years ago I was frantically wrapping last minute Xmas pressies and DC came down - couldnt sleep. I have a tactic for dealing with can't sleep. Find the MOST boring programme to put on. Found Classical Andre in Mastricht.

DC LOVED Him! We watched the whole concert - mesmerised. At the end I think DC knew they had pushed the boundaries. Said good night mum and went to bed! Thank you Andre!

Beaverbridge · 11/09/2023 22:05

Something creepy about him.

Colinthedaxi · 11/09/2023 22:05

I'm another who has seen him live, took partners 96yo gran who was a huge fan. It was a fabulous night, we also got up and danced in the aisles (and I don't dance!)

Notinmylifethyme · 11/09/2023 22:13

We get tickets and see his shows at the cinema. Nothing like 3 generations of family having an afternoon out. Then go for a meal.

Slightly cheesy and theatrical, but all good fun.

And the orchestra don't have to wear those outfits. They can leave and play elsewhere. But I suspect they're OK with it as they stay.

You couldn't get me listening to rap or house music though. Takes all sorts.

emmama2 · 11/09/2023 22:14

I take my mum to the cinema to watch his concerts for the past few years. We love it. (I do bring the average age down at 34 haha) would love to go watch it live but sadly too far to take my mum. Hopefully he will be in the UK again soon.

Whattodo112222 · 11/09/2023 22:16

Not live, but on YouTube. The Macarena was particularly delightful.

TenOhSeven · 11/09/2023 21:24

No, because I'm not 80 years old!

Less of the ageism please. My mum's 79 and you'd never catch her going to see him.

NashvilleQueen · 11/09/2023 22:27

I am glad you've started this thread because I always see the ad at the cinema and wonder what it's about. I'm going to YouTube him now.

Gilead · 11/09/2023 22:32

My sister, younger than me, adores him. I love classical music but couldn’t go to a Rieu concert, he’s appears to me to be as smug as fuck!

peachgreen · 11/09/2023 22:33

I watched one at Christmas with my FIL one year and got quite sucked in to the whole nonsense. The Baileys might have helped that, mind.

Milkand2sugarsplease · 11/09/2023 22:33

Desperate to see him in Maastricht! I'd love it.

2003unbearable · 11/09/2023 22:38

DH took MIL to Maastricht to see him and yes, he (DH, not Andre Rieu) was absolutely leathered 😂 they both absolutely loved it!!

Icequeen01 · 11/09/2023 22:42

My DSis and I treated our DM see him in concert at Wembley a few years ago. We went with her and I hated every minute of it! Wembley also cocked up a lot of people's tickets and we didn't have the better seats we had paid for. To my horror we were sent 3 complimentary tickets to see him in Birmingham. I refused to go and my poor DSis had to go again with DM. I gave my ticket to a friend of my DSis who thought she'd won the lottery!

BerfyTigot · 11/09/2023 22:43

Oops, yes, meant to say tears 😁

I'm obsessed. I feel like I know all the audiences reactions to Voila! By heart.

That was a really hot day but they still look cool...

I watch the Emma Kok video on repeat on Tiktok.

BerfyTigot · 11/09/2023 22:53

Thanks for all the replies. Good to know how many people loved it.

Also fab technique to get kids back to bed! 😁😁

I don't know anyone who would go with me. I'll have to find a delicate way to ask people 😁

Trite nonsense, with a whole heap of sexism thrown in.

To put it mildly. If I wanted to hear Strauss butchered at weird tempos I’d phone BT customer service and go on hold for aeons.

I suppose the women in flouncy ball gowns swaying rhythmically to a weeping audience of Dutch people holding hands is the bonus.

My mother likes him, but she also likes Daniel O’Donnell.

Sucette · 11/09/2023 22:59

The audience do look like they're having fun. I liked it when they tipped snow over the audience. I saw a beautiful rendition of The Blue Danube where they did blue water lighting effects. I think it was in the Albert Hall. I think he played something composed by Anthony Hopkins when Anthony Hopkins was in the audience.

GreenClock · 11/09/2023 23:12

I watched the Christmas concerts on Sky Arts (loved the one with the Japanese children’s choir) and can see the appeal. The audience seems mesmerised. The women’s clothes are old-fashioned but no one is making them stay and oerform I suppose, and I bet that they earn well.

He donated 360k a few years ago so that children from poorer families in Maastricht could have music lessons.

eggandonion · 11/09/2023 23:28

Definitely baileys would add to the enjoyment and weepiness.

Maastricht is beautiful

Zippitydoodaa · 11/09/2023 23:56

I've seen him twice , once in Glasgow and once in Liverpool .
It's exactly how you see on tv .
Brilliant, if you like that kind of orchestra concert.
The Scottish Philharmonic Orchestra are just as good , went to see them one xmas and they were brilliant, had pyrotechnics going on in background to some of the music.

NomenNudum · 12/09/2023 06:39

It's not my thing but I expect a lot of orchestral musicians are happy to wear flouncy dresses and play Strauss if it lands them what seems like a solid, sustainable career.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 12/09/2023 06:43

My mum and MIL absolutely love him. Have all the cd's and dvd's. MIL always goes to his concert when he is in the UK and has been abroad to see him as well. Personally I don't get it, but it's not my taste in music either.

It does make buying Christmas presents easier when he has a new dvd out though.

GremlinDolphin4 · 12/09/2023 07:19

Fabulous concerts! We’ve been a couple of times and I’d love to go to Maarstricht )his home town) to one as the whole town gets involved.
