Earthquake In Morocco

Such a dreadful situation - apparently 2K dead & more are likely as they search the rubble. I will probably donate but I think more needs to be done to prevent such terrible damage eg build sturdier homes etc in the first place.

I think the government might lack the resources for such upgrades on a massive scale, but I do agree. But also this earthquake was unprecedented. The Atlas Mountains aren’t like the ones in the Pacific Rim, which much more active.

Cities like Agadir are built earthquake proof. The original city was destroyed in 1960 by an earthquake (12,000 died) and when it was rebuilt, all buildings are required to have deeper foundations than standard. The damage has come from very old, poorly constructed buildings collapsing. Praying for the affected people, it’s just utterly horrific.
