Greece in Oct

Dh and I were wondering about going to Greece in oct half term (with the kids). Anyone been at that time of year? We want to do self catering and when we went in early Oct a few years ago, the local shops were shut and the restaurants were winding down.

Any suggestions of places on greek islands that will still be set up for tourists in Oct half term?

I would probably aim for Crete and stay in one of the working towns rather than one of the resorts - Chania, Rethymnon, Agios Nikolaos, Heraklion, maybe Sitia.

Most of the more touristy resorts start shutting down mid October
