Mine is 20 years! Is that really bad? I'm wondering if it's actually really unhygienic but I wash towels regularly.

Glovesandscarf · 10/09/2023 07:09

28 I think and I’m glad to see I’m in good company. Although it’s a bit thin &it’s doing better than some newer towels
any recs for where to buy new towels for when the bathroom is done?

scrivette · 10/09/2023 07:20

43 - it was my baby towel.

TodayForTomorrow · 10/09/2023 07:27

My university towels from Dunelm Mill. 18 years!

I have a couple of towels (now in the dog towel pile) which have my late aunt’s maiden name name-tag sewed in them when she went to boarding school. I think they must be about 75 years old as, if she were alive, she’d be about 85 now.
They are excellent for applying to a wet Labrador.

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/09/2023 07:35

26 years old - a large white bathsheet and a navy hand towel than my granny got me from BHS in 1997 to take to university. Still in regular use.

Mr Monkey bought some with him when we moved in together that are definitely older. They are mainly relegated to sports or clean up towels.

Somewhere in the box there's one from my mum's house. She died in 1998, and it wasn't brand new then 😁. 30 years would be my best guess.

Oldhag5 · 10/09/2023 07:50

I inherited some towels from an elderly relative 25 years ago, she must have had them for years before me. We use them for the dog!

mehtivation · 10/09/2023 07:53

Bought with wedding present gift vouchers in 2005, John Lewis. All now not main rotation towels but emergency ones for sickness, decorating and taking cats to vets... when cat got run over and leg had to be amputated the vet wrote his name on it with a sharpie so that's his towel now

PurBal · 10/09/2023 07:54

50 years+. It was bought by my mum in 70s and was handed down as “an old towel”. We use it for the beach mostly.

Ozziedream · 10/09/2023 07:56

20 years, main tranche is 16 years (wedding gift list).

I bought a small dark coloured towel to take to hospital 17 years ago for the birth of my first child. It was reused during second birth and now DH is using it as a gym towel. I have some older tea towels though. Bleach stained but serviceable for bathroom and kitchen cleaning and mopping up general spills. I think we call them reusable kitchen roll nowadays lol.

cheapskatemum · 10/09/2023 08:17

Funny, I was on holiday with a colleague this summer & we worked out my towel was older than her. I have 2 that I know for a fact we had in 1999 as there were 3 and the lime green one went missing at the water park in Tenerife on our family holiday that year. So to answer your question: around 25 years old.

Azaeleasinbloom · 10/09/2023 08:20

About 40 years. Bought it with matching hand towels for my first flat. Use it for the dogs now. It refuses to die ..

If your towels are still good and they are a lightish colour, just dye them to match the new decor. Dyson machine dye is very easy to use.

I've heard good reports of Dunelm towels, but I'm always paralysed by indecision - so many different types of towel. I've been trying to buy new ones for about a year!

  1. My 35 year old Christy towel has lasted all these years. It's now been downgraded to a work towel and lives in my utility room. Still lots of life left in it.

I am always horrified when I see articles like the one below. So bad for the environment to encourage people to replace all towels after 2 years. My oldest were bought for my first house 20 years ago.

https://www.online-bedrooms.co.uk/be-inspired/germ-free-homes-how-often-to-replace-household-items/

what a load of rubbish with the exception of manual toothbrushes or ETB heads which should be replaced more often due to wear. and I have an 18yo towel to answer the question

HettySunshine · 10/09/2023 08:35

My mum still has a towel with my name sewn into it from when I took it on Brownie pack holiday.

I'm 44 new and it wasn't new when that label went in!

Watfrordmummy · 10/09/2023 08:39

27 years still using - Christy towel. Nothing wrong with it apart from it doesn't go with decor anymore Confused

CornedBeef451 · 10/09/2023 08:53

I think about 20 years old too. I did have some older ones that DM gave me but they went into the rag bag in my lockdown decluttering.

I do have some very ugly blankets that predate me though, so they're 50 or more.

TheFluffiestCat · 10/09/2023 08:55

1973, wedding present to my parents. They're thin and a bit threadbare at the edges, and I wouldn't give them to guests, but they dry quickly and roll up small so they're ideal for swimming, holidays and that time year where it's not quite cold enough to put the heating on but not quite warm enough for the thick towels to dry.

imnotthatkindofmum · 10/09/2023 09:02

25 years but I use it as a painting cloth now. Tbh it's better than some of my currently used towels....apart from the paint. I also use it when I'm dyeing my hair.

imnotthatkindofmum · 10/09/2023 09:03

Actually DH has one that's older in his sailing kit. It's not "my" towel though as it's always the one he's used since he was about 12 (now 45)

VioletCharlotte · 10/09/2023 09:06

We've got a 'dog towel' (towels that are just used to dry the dog) that I can remember ring my brother's beach towel when we were kids. It has to be about 35 years old! I'm sure my Mum has older ones.

CMOTDibbler · 10/09/2023 09:10

My oldest towel has a childhood name tape lovingly sewn in by my mum - it was my swimming towel, I think I got it approx age 10, so 40ish years old
