Not living my life well, am I ?
Im on my phone constantly and snack a lot. What's worked for you if you've had this issue?

Thoroughly recommend reading how to break up with your phone.

SnorkeMor · 09/09/2023 17:50

I had to click on this to see if I’d started this post!

Me too!

movintothecountry · 09/09/2023 17:52

Tackle phone usage first, that will free up to do other stuff like exercise.

First rule, do not go on your phone first thing in the morning. It will suck half your day away and your motivation.

I work in a laptop so during the week I open WhatsApp Web via my laptop so I can see messages I need to and don't have to pock up my phone (unless it rings)

Switch off all phone notifications that aren't essential.

Find something you enjoy doing with your evenings instead. Reading, having a bath, going fit a walk with a friend (or whilst listening to a podcast).

Good luck! It's a difficult addiction to kick!

TenOhSeven · 09/09/2023 17:53

Are you me?!

DynamicK · 09/09/2023 18:04

Many of us around then?

I start books but I think I've lost my ability to focus on reading books.
I'm on the phone for ages, then I realise I'm hungry so grab a sandwich, a biscuit or anything that's easy. This goes on all day.

I try to go out for walks and I don't look at my phone then.

@movintothecountry ok that makes sense. I'll cut down phone usage first.

I could have written this OP. My issue is I have no one in my life other than the kids so it's hard to find anything (or anyone) to fill the gap.

NouveauNom · 09/09/2023 18:12

Delete the apps that are the biggest time suck.

Britpopbaby · 09/09/2023 18:15

Weight watchers for weight.

Proudgypsy · 09/09/2023 18:17

I recommend leaving the house without your phone, even for 5 minutes to walk down the road and back.

DynamicK · 09/09/2023 18:17

I have a dh but it's very up and down with him so I prefer the company of my phone tbh.
My dc don't need me as much now they're getting older and I work part time. So I'm not on it all the time but all my down time is on my phone.
In the heat today, I've been on my phone a lot. I'm just going to check my screen time.,,,,,,,omg 6 hrs. That's awful.

DiddlyDonut · 09/09/2023 18:19

I could've written this. If I'm not with little one I'm on my phone. And eating / snacking. It's an awful rut to be in.

itsallnewnow · 09/09/2023 18:23

Do you have an iPhone, you can set restrictions on different apps and times of the day, I've done that and it's made a difference

DynamicK · 09/09/2023 18:25

I'm still disgusted with my 6 hrs. I could've read, watched a film, gone out with dc or met a friend but I stared at my phone and can't even recall anything that I found interesting.
Maybe an article on India renaming itself to Bharat and the horrific earthquake in Morocco. Er.,,, genuinely can't recall anything else.

Me too....FML:(

Toomuvhonot · 09/09/2023 18:39

Your not alone

Colourfulponderings · 09/09/2023 18:41

@DynamicK I was the same with reading but I’ve got my mojo back. What I did was read much easier books than I used to and built up from there. I also try to leave my phone in another room.

Hazey19 · 09/09/2023 18:41

snap.

zippitydoda · 09/09/2023 18:45

My daily average 9 hours 57 minutes 🤯

crabette · 09/09/2023 18:51

I can totally relate to this OP.

A good tip I read was to move all your apps off your home screen. Which then means that everytime you unlock your phone, you have a split second where you're faced with a blank screen reminder of "why have I just unlocked my phone?"

Couple this with deleting (or turning off notifications, if you can't manage deleting cold turkey!) any "infinity scroll" apps. Basically anything that has a feed refresh that basically sucks time into oblivion.

Could you find a book club OP? Might give you a nice initial incentive to focus on a book and get back into reading - also to get out and meet new folk.

Holidaydiscosinglemum · 09/09/2023 18:56

Oh me too OP - especially in the evenings when kids go to bed. I'm mindlessscrolling while watching things - it's hideous.

Farmageddon · 09/09/2023 18:58

OP could you find some podcasts that you enjoy and listen to them on walks, that way you can use your phone but do something more useful. Just try and build more activity into your day to day life.

Would you join a class which might get you out of the house?

In terms of food, you need to find better snacks - protein or something that isn't sugary or simple carbs.

Chippy4me · 09/09/2023 19:01

I think the best thing is to try and keep busy.

I get distracted a lot so i listen to audiobooks (you can get them for free on your local library app) and then do things like clean, go on the exercise bike, do my nails, colouring in etc.

I got a cheap outdoor table and chairs and have started leaving my phone inside and taking a word search or colouring book out with me.

I also try and go on as many walks as I can.

The fact that you recognise you have a problem is the first step.

Why not come up with a healthy lifestyle plan and start Monday.

If you lost 1lb a week you’ll be at least a stone down by Xmas or if you lose 2 lbs a week you’ll be at least 2 stone down by Xmas which would be a massive achievement.

Chippy4me · 09/09/2023 19:02

I also snack on ice poles in this heat.

They take a while to eat, are cheap, low calorie and keep you cool.

WhatsTheWorstThatCldHappen · 09/09/2023 19:13

Start small. I give my phone to DH at 9pm and go upstairs to read in bed. Then he brings it up when he comes an hour or so later. A second a PP who said go for a very quick and easy book to ease you back in.

derrydee · 09/09/2023 19:31

Ice poles are a great shout!

I am the same and often scroll in the morning - especially if DC wake early! And then again in the evening. In both cases I get stuck there and have no motivation to move.

I am also totally addicted.
