I have been trying to save a bit of money by making my own pain au chocolat and bacon & cheese turnovers etc. Going to make a bakewell tart tomorrow.

What are your favourite simple things to make?

I use the ready-made puff pastry for Vol-au-vents, pie tops and Turnovers.

I only buy puff pastry because it takes hours to make, I make shortcrust as I think it is vastly superior to shop bought.

last pastry dishes were:

Sweet Shortcrust - a tray of sweet mincemeat tart
Puff - ham, leek and chicken pie with a crème fraiche sauce.

puff pastry with smoked haddock, hard boiled egg and cheese sauce filling is lovely.
I use pastry ends to make a samosa type pasties, made into triangles with curry inside and baked not fried.

Sausage rolls, although I don't eat them. Cheap sausage meat, plenty of black pepper, onions and herbs. Quiche, crumbled block of feta,2 beaten eggs,100 MLS double cream, any veg I have, (especially leftover)broccoli, peppers, tomatoes, red onion, asparagus. Green beans. I make the sides shallow, then it looks like a fancy crustless job.

Quiche

You need to also weigh up the cost of turning the oven on and fill it up to make it worthwhile. Maybe add in a lasagne, cottage pie etc also.

Tarte tatin- MIL had a glut of apples and pears at the moment, but I've also made it with rhubarb
Apple/apple blackberry pie
Strudel
With filo pastry I made these yesterday because I have a glut of runner beans https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/runner-bean-samosas

Runner bean samosas recipe | BBC Good Food

Runner beans work really well with spices and these curried filo triangles are the perfect showcase - a great starter or nibble for 6 people

I make a sausage play (glorified sausage roll)

Soften onions add sage to squeezed out pack of sausages and we'll do a plait

Anyone tried the jus roll gluten free puff pastry? I did try making gluten free short crust pastry last year when making mince pies but it turned out crap and by the following day you could've broken a tooth on them.

I'm all electric, I always batch cook, sausage rolls and quiche are frozen... I've learned my lesson now, cut up the quiche into portions before freezing. I can't make pastry because of arthritis and tenosynovitis in my hands. DH bought a sausage roll recently said it was tasteless, and look at the list of ingredients!

KnickerlessParsons · 12/09/2023 08:01

Cheese straws with puff pastry. DCs hoover them up!

Borntobeamum · 12/09/2023 08:16

Another vote for cheese/marmite straws.
Or cheese/mustard
Or just cheese.
