Anyone know Newcastle and taxi firms in Newcastle?

My daughter is going up to university there and has a job on the Whitley Road retail park.

She may have some early morning starts and some finishes after dark.

I can see she could get the Metro to Palmersville and walk, but it looks like a lonely walk, or a passageway to an industrial estate.

There are buses going up past ASDA but they don’t leave Haymarket until gone 8am.

She may have to use a taxi unless anyone can advise me otherwise? And can anyone recommend a reliable taxi firm?

thanks!

Blueline, five star, grosvenor.
Uber is readily available.

I’m pretty sure buses leave the haymarket before 8am…have another check.
there’s a huge dwp complex between Whitley road and city centre that employs thousands…I’m sure many of them start earlier than 8am
Just have another look….good luck in her new job, but be warned she’ll not want to leave Newcastle after uni!

Winchester100 · 09/09/2023 18:49

Thanks for your replies. I think she’s going to love Newcastle!

The section of the retail park she needs to access is opposite ASDA. The buses don’t seem to run that way, or rather there’s something like a 351 going to Whitley bay and the first bus leaves just after 8am

Blue line is commonly used

Stay well away from Palmersville metro, the place is a dangerous dump, stick to buses or taxis

Winchester100 · 09/09/2023 18:56

Thanks, she thinks she can get the metro to Palmersville and walk, I looked on Google maps and thought ‘no you can’t!’

DD went to Newcastle and stayed after graduating. She uses Ubers all the time. She lives on the coast now and Palmersville Metro station looks like something from the cold War.

tryingtocatchthewind · 09/09/2023 19:09

She’ll be fine on a morning using Palmersville metro but I wouldn’t use it on a night if I was alone.

tryingtocatchthewind · 09/09/2023 19:10

It’s a fair distance from the city centre, probably at least half an hour on the metro including wait time

Another vote for Blueline. They're a pretty big firm in the NE. I've never had any issues with them and they have an app where you can book and pay online.

I was going to say Longbenton metro would be a better walk but just read it’s opposite Asda rather than where The Range is. Palmersville would be ok in the mornings but not so much on her own in the evening. Buses to Palmersville and walking around the road way would be ok, it’s a busy road, it’s just the metro station where kids hang around. Blue Line or Direct Cars are ok taxi companies

CeeceeBloomingdale · 09/09/2023 19:25

By the way loads of buses have changed operators and numbers this week and not all the online resources are updated yet so there may be more bus options than you think.

AlwaysUnreasonablyFabulous · 09/09/2023 19:28

There will be far more jobs available nearer to the city centre, I would tell her to keep trying. People saying Palmersville will be fine in the mornings, I strongly disagree, that's when they are stumbling back to their dumps to sleep it off.

bryceQ · 09/09/2023 19:58

Why is she working here instead of the city centre? It's a bit random

justwatchingtelly · 09/09/2023 20:42

Blueline are great. I remember realizing that my drink had been spiked (20) years ago, on a busy Saturday night, and I was feeling totally out of it, not well at all.

I called them (I was a regular) and they had someone with me within ten minutes.

I have never forgotten that.

PoachedDregs · 09/09/2023 20:45

Perhaps not helpful but it's an awkward location, she'd be better off getting a different job. However, like others have said Blueline is a reputable firm. Plenty of Ubers too.

Gatekeeper · 09/09/2023 20:47

Another vote for Blueline, easy to book and reliable

Winchester100 · 09/09/2023 22:37

thanks for all your replies.

it does sound random but she has a job at home that she can transfer there really easily and she thinks that’s the thing to do.

I think it’s too hard to get to and I’m going to end up paying for taxis every week because she’ll otherwise put herself at risk.

That walk from the metro will be absolutely fine in daytime, I’ve done it many a time to get to the soft play on that retail park. Wouldn’t fancy it after dark though. Blueline and Fivestar are both fine and have apps, and there’s always Uber.

Winchester100 · 10/09/2023 00:31

Thank you.

Arriva have stopped a load of routes that passed this area, I would call it Benton Asda.

Stagecoach have extended some of their cross city services to cover these routes, but they don't call in the Haymarket.
