Being taught beliefs that go strongly against those most commonly accepted in society. Being highly susceptible to being manipulated into enacting extreme acts of violence.

It's like grooming.

Cutting people's off from friends or family who don't share their views. Telling people they are different, better etc. and that's why others don't understand them.

Have you watched the programme on iplayer about storming the Capital? That's quite interesting.

Radicalisation is the process

Extremism is the end result.

Extremism the holding of extreme political or religious views.

One doesn't just wake up on day and go from being a regular 9-5 office worker with 2.4 kids, mowing the lawn and being friendly to the neighbours... and the next day being prepared to die detonating a bomb in a city centre. The long process of getting there is called radicalisation. Its what professionals are asked to spot.

There are different kinds of extremism. In the UK the two types of greatest concern are Islamist extremism and far-right extremism (going by Prevent numbers). Islamist extremism is when people are not just believing in Islam as a religion, but believe its OK to commit violence in order to forcibly establish an Islamic state. Its considered extremism because the vast majority of Muslims do not approve of the violent groups pursuing this.

Far-right extremists include neo-Nazis and white supremacists. They have their own vision of how the world should be and accept violence to achieve that.

There are many other types of extremism but you get the idea.

Radicalisation is the process by which people go from having more mainstream beliefs to becoming extremist.
