What age did you get your first couple of grey hairs and how long until lots?

I saw my first one on my 40th birthday, and now at 45 I seem to have two or three! I realise this is not bad at all in the scheme of things but as I have very dark hair naturally they are pretty obvious. So I am wondering what age others got their first few and how long until it was super obvious e.g you had to start dyeing or just accept it and be a grey goddess???

Noticed first ones at 33. Didn't get lots until 53. I'm 56 now and have a very grey hairline, but not many overall.

Few greys around 35. I went blonde a few years ago. They blend in now. I am not too fussed. Roots are still mixed brown and grey. Going to give it a few more years to see how grey I am. My mum was a lovely white grey and I hope I go that colour

By my mid twenties my roots had a lot of grey. Now I'm 47 and my hair needs to be done every 5 weeks at a minimum

First one at 33. Probably about 10% grey 25 years later.

First ones in my 30s. Now in my 50s and still very few but more noticeable now. I haven't dyed my hair and have no intention of dying it now, I think at my age I look younger with the odd grey than if I dyed it. My grandfather had dark hair into his 80s, my Mum is in her late 70s and is a gorgeous salt and pepper and had more grey than me in her 50s so I think I'm doing OK.

Some people seem to go grey much quicker though, my SIL was very dark, then got a Mallen streak then turned white over a matter of about 5 years. We're the same age and like me she didn't dye her hair.

27 was first time I noticed grey hairs but didn’t go generally grey until late 40s. I’m 56 now with loads of silver grey hair and really like it.

Whataretalkingabout · 09/09/2023 14:05

At 63 still not a single Grey hair in sight. Only one in the family. I have no idea why.

BackToOklahoma · 09/09/2023 14:09

I got my first grey hairs in my early 20s. I have very dark hair so probably easier to see. It didn’t become noticeable until my late 30s.

GreenMarigold · 09/09/2023 14:24

First greys in my early 30s. Now early 40s and quite grey around the temples, a scattering of grey elsewhere but I’ve got enough dark brown for that to be considered my dominant hair colour still.

Noticed the first one at about 45. Now at mid fifties, I have a few (perhaps 20?) but they don't bother me. I have very dark brown, almost black hair, so they do show a bit, but I don't want to dye my hair.

ohsuzannah · 09/09/2023 14:36

Red hair, now 70 and they are starting to show at the sides.

BalloonArch · 09/09/2023 14:36

27 when I started dying it. About 45 when I gave up.
Now 52 and love it
(Scraped back because I was at the gym, it looks a lot better washed!)

Had the odd one mid 30’s. Now 45 my hairline around my face grows back grey (which is a pain when waiting in between hair colours) with a fair few through my hair now.

I would love to go grey and embrace it - I tried during lockdown and I looked like Miss Trunchbull. My greys are a horrible grey colour and wirey texture so for now I’m trying to stretch it to every 10 weeks with a root touch up around the front (cheap) in between.

My sil has a lovely bits at the front grey/white colour she can carry it - mine doesn’t grow like that.

I had a sprinkling of grey hairs in my late twenties and over time it's been streaked burgundy, blonde or whatever but now I don't worry about it.

Now in my early sixties with a fair sprinkling all over now but who cares? As long as it's clean and well cut, in a style which suits you, presents the right image (whatever that is) and you can manage it I don't think the colour really matters. I've very little sun damage to my skin and I think that helps to give a youthful image if that's important.
