What age did you get your first couple of grey hairs and how long until lots?

I saw my first one on my 40th birthday, and now at 45 I seem to have two or three! I realise this is not bad at all in the scheme of things but as I have very dark hair naturally they are pretty obvious. So I am wondering what age others got their first few and how long until it was super obvious e.g you had to start dyeing or just accept it and be a grey goddess???

Forties maybe for first one?
52 now and only a handful on the underside.
Mum was very grey at my age, though, so no rhyme nor reason to it.

Barleysugar86 · 08/09/2023 20:56

First ones noticed early thirties, now late thirties and if I don't dye my hair I feel like they are definitely enough to be noticeable!

pennyfest · 08/09/2023 20:57

I've been finding the odd grey hair since I was a teenager. I'm talking maybe 3-4 a year- and I've always pulled them out! I'm now 35 and I've noticed in the last year or so that I'm finding them slightly more often.

I had enough grey by 25 to start using dye to cover now I’m 49 and growing out the dye and going grey. The constant slapping on brown dye on my roots for 20odd years was making my hair fall out the last couple of years

mrsm43s · 08/09/2023 21:02

Found my first early 40s. Now in my 50s and still have no more than a handful.

OTOH, my DH was fully white by 35.

It's genetics.

WanderingWitches · 08/09/2023 21:03

I first noticed about 36. I'm 43 now and they are mainly through my temples. Not enough to be streaks though. I really wanted a mallen streak!

  1. Dyed it until 36. 48 now and 80% white - like, WHITE white. I love it.

Late teens/early 20s I had waist length hair and dyed it black, blue, red, purple, pink... Fun times!

First one at 45 - currently 47 and still
only have 2.

no kids

PlantDoctor · 08/09/2023 21:10

I had my first couple at 15! Am now 35 and noticeably grey (not all over, just shows up a lot in my dark hair). I'm bad at keeping up with dyeing it too!

BIossomtoes · 08/09/2023 21:10

First at 16. Stopped dyeing at 42 and have been silver ever since.

Sounds gorgeous 😍
None of my parents or grandparents went fully white so I'm guessing I won't either. I'm gutted because it's lovely.

MrsPepperp0t · 08/09/2023 21:13

Not dissimilar to you, OP - first one around 40. Now 47 and have very few - haven't counted but I'd guess under 10 of them!

Notquitethere60 · 08/09/2023 21:15

In my 50s first grey hair ; mid sixties now still similar , no need for any dyeing. Genetic; my parents didn’t go grey early either.

BarnacleBeasley · 08/09/2023 21:21

I was 27, now in my 40s and still only have one or two at a time.

Singleandproud · 08/09/2023 21:31

I have natural dark brown hair, I dont dye it and I have lots of silver hairs spread randomly through my hair they are quite shiny and I had a student once ask how I'd put tinsel in my hair 😂.

Late teens I had a few but they started multiplying during covid when I was 34, they dont seem to grow in any particular pattern and I thought they were meant to come in more at the temples.

TheChosenTwo · 08/09/2023 22:30

I’m 38 and have had 3 for the last 2 years, I just pull them out 😂 one of my dds curls my hair for me sometimes and she’d tell me if I had more, she pulls out the 3 when she sees them growing back. My mum was getting greys from her 20’s so I think I’m doing well! I do get my hair coloured (every 6 months at the moment) but only to make it a more interesting colour, I’m really not bothered about the 3 greys but when they start coming through more i may start getting it coloured more regularly. I don’t know, I have very dark hair naturally so it will be more noticeable but I think when you get into your 40’s and 50’s it looks a bit unnatural to have just plain dark hair and the maintenance to go more regularly just doesn’t appeal
to me.

Cece92 · 08/09/2023 22:44

My mum said I was born with 3 grey hairs lol I had jet black hair. In seriousness I was about 22 xx

Pleaseme · 08/09/2023 22:47

First one I was 22. I’m 43 now and have a couple but straight and white rather than grey. I think it’s a good thing as I will likely do highlights at some point and they will blend in easier.

MonkeyPuddle · 08/09/2023 22:48

21 my first came through. Spent my 20’s and early 30’s having blonde highlights, looked lovely. But then I stopped caring as much, money got tighter which accelerated that and now I have two long white patches framing my face. And I really like it!

Whataretheodds · 08/09/2023 22:50

Got my first at about 35. Now 42, still rarely have more than 1 at a time.

MiddleParking · 08/09/2023 22:51

I think I was in my teens when I had my first one. I’ve had lots since my early-mid twenties. I wish it would get on with it tbh as I don’t have enough to justify colouring it yet but I also don’t love the white.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 08/09/2023 22:53

I’m mid 30s and haven’t found a grey hair yet.

Winederlust · 08/09/2023 22:55

Mid 30s for first one and now (mid 40s) enough to be noticable but not enough to just embrace. Annoyingly.

TheChosenTwo · 08/09/2023 22:57

I agree that it’s annoying, I wouldn’t mind waking up to be grey over night but it’s the middle stages!
