What age did you get your first couple of grey hairs and how long until lots?

I saw my first one on my 40th birthday, and now at 45 I seem to have two or three! I realise this is not bad at all in the scheme of things but as I have very dark hair naturally they are pretty obvious. So I am wondering what age others got their first few and how long until it was super obvious e.g you had to start dyeing or just accept it and be a grey goddess???

First aged 24. Started colouring my hair at 29 when they became very noticeable and couldn’t be hidden with strategic hair flipping (they’re all in my parting and at the front). I’m early 30s now and they’re really noticeable when my roots grow in. Once they cure all world illness I hope they can spend a few years researching slowing down grey hairs 😂

2020 when I was 35, it just appeared one day. I hadn’t had any until then but my mum & gran died within 10 days of each other, which happened within days of me and the kids ending an isolation as we had been exposed to covid. One day I looked in the mirror and I had 3 colours in my hair, the faded red dye, my natural brown and a stripe of grey at the roots, having had basically no grey hair at all until then.

About 38

Am 50 now and have a smattering around the front and a few at the back. I am fairish and highlight my hair so it’s not noticeable to me or anyone

I think it’s quite common to just have a few for ages

I had my first grey hairs at 49.
I'm nearly 60 and I have a few more greys and some white hairs but I'm nowhere near done yet 😁

sezzer87 · 08/09/2023 23:03

28 first one and now 36 and only the odd one. Don't die my hair as its kind of dirty blonde and seems to blend in. Might start dying it soon though.

Occitane · 08/09/2023 23:12

I'm 52. I had my first one 2 or 3 years ago, and I haven't got many now. My DD is 26 and has more than me! My father's mother went completely white in her twenties, but had beautiful thick white hair and looked very smart.

MsLavender · 08/09/2023 23:16

Early 30s I found my first, at almost 40 I would say about 15% is grey but hard to tell accurately as I colour my hair.

fettuccini · 08/09/2023 23:27

I was 29. It was Christmas Day.

FunnysInLaJardin · 08/09/2023 23:28

few greys around 40, now a good 25% grey at 52. I henna it and voila!

fridaynight1 · 08/09/2023 23:39

I was 13. Sat in a boring French lesson and my friend spotted it and kindly pulled it out. Call me weird but I kept it, it's in an envelope somewhere ..

Roselilly36 · 09/09/2023 00:47

First few grey hairs around early forties, now in my fifties and still only have a few.

kwetu · 09/09/2023 00:52

At age 17 I noticed my first, mine seem to be linked to pregnancies (always developed more during each pregnancy) 49 now and maybe 15-20% grey hair.

Islandermummy · 09/09/2023 04:55

Starting to get a few now (I'm 40). I'm planning to see how I look as they come through, and avoid starting on hair dye if possible... I feel like dealing with roots would be really annoying and potentially look worse than having salt and pepper hair (I have very dark hair, too).

Might change my mind if I don't like how it looks though!

Islandermummy · 09/09/2023 04:58

Also, i noticed quite a few more after becoming a mum... is there a known link (tiredness?) or is it just coincidence? Some PP have mentioned getting them when preggo

IGotThrillsTheyreMultiplying · 09/09/2023 06:33

Spotted my first about 5 years ago - so 38.

43 now and maybe 3% grey? Something like that. But I have blond hair which makes them very hard to spot in along the rest of my hair. I suspect I'll need to be 50% grey or more for them to be noticeable.

blendedfamly · 09/09/2023 07:11

Mid forties . No grey yet.

StaySpicy · 09/09/2023 07:49

About 30 for my first. I now have a fair few and as I have an ombré with natural hair at the top they're still visible. I don't care. I think there's less stigma of being grey these days thanks to the trend of grey hair dye.

MuggleMe · 09/09/2023 08:04

Late teens. So many now especially around my temples at 38.

bluegreenandcoral · 09/09/2023 08:09

I found my first one at 27. Now ten years on from that and I still only have a few. Hoping it stays that way for as long as possible!

RockaLock · 09/09/2023 08:33

I'm 48 and only have a few coming through. They've only really started appearing in the last couple of years.

GigiAnnna · 09/09/2023 08:37

I got the odd grey at 25, I'm now almost 36 and I don't have loads but it's starting to get more noticeable, to me at least if I don't cover them. They're just around the front of my head.

Disappeared · 09/09/2023 12:50

This thread has really surprised me I thought there would be a lot of people like me pushing 50 and colouring grey for 20+ years

needtofatoff · 09/09/2023 12:56

Im almost 46. Found my very first one last week so following with interest.

Blanketpolicy · 09/09/2023 12:59

Started in my 30s but remained as only a few here and there and with hair colouring it wasn't noticeable. In my early 50s and grew colour out over lockdowns/WFH and the back of my head is still very dark, but I have silver halo (as my hairdresser calls it) at the front which is mostly silver, so now I get grey/silver highlights at the back a couple of times a year to blend it all in.

AhNowTed · 09/09/2023 13:03

I'm 58 and still only a few unnoticeable strands.

In fact I've more grey downstairs 😂
