What in the Little Shop of Horrors is this?

New garden. Innocuous looking plant has sprung a huge stem and sprouted pods that look like they’d either kill you or make a curry hot enough to see through time. What on Earth is it and is it toxic? I am not particularly green fingered and this is a really weird looking plant.

It's a phormium.
They sometimes take some years to flower (the black spikes).

No idea but there some fantastic plant ID apps that identify a plant when you take a pic of it.

and no it's not toxic as far as I'm aware.
