If you had a front porch would you sit on it?

It’s so common in America and here I rarely see any houses with front porches.

Would be nice to have a morning coffee and watch the world go by.

I’d love a wrap around porch with a swing chair, like the Walton’s had. I’d swing in the chair and drink iced tea all summer

Delatron · 08/09/2023 15:07

Well yes if I lived on a prairie in America! I do love the look of a rocking chair and a wrap around porch.

But wouldn’t work on my rat run of a busy road. Back garden is peaceful though.

ItSoundsLikeADrag · 08/09/2023 15:08

No. I sit at the back where I have privacy.
I’ve seen houses listed on RM with a bench or table and chairs and I always think ‘what an odd place to sit’.
It might be nice if you lived rurally and there was nature. I do live somewhere small but I still don’t want to sit and watch cars and dog walkers go by.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 08/09/2023 15:08

No because but it’s north facing and I can’t see the road from the front of the house to watch anything, and it’s a a boring lane with hardly any traffic anyway. Neighbour opposite sits out though, but that’s because it’s south facing and their back garden is dark and so the front garden is actually bigger/nicer planted etc than the back for that reason.

TheFlis12345 · 08/09/2023 15:08

I would, in the US houses tend to be set back from the road further than UK houses.

ThomasHardyPerennial · 08/09/2023 15:09

The enclosed porches on Dawson's Creek always looked great 😀! I'd definitely sit out in one at the back of the house, but not sure about the front. Would be worried I'd have to say hello to everyone.

CornedBeef451 · 08/09/2023 15:10

No I wouldn't.

Our two opposite neighbours sometimes bring camping chairs out and sit on the pavement together while their DCs play ball games amongst the cars. I find it all very odd.

Drews · 08/09/2023 15:12

I do sit on my front porch because my garden is at the front of my house.

MidnightOnceMore · 08/09/2023 15:12

I have a bench at the front and sometimes sit there. I usually sit at the back, but occasionally the mood takes me.

It's nice to be out the front sometimes, our street is pretty quiet but neighbours do pass by.

spilltheteapot · 08/09/2023 15:13

No way, not unless there was a street party or the road was closed for a race of some sort.
I’d say in the UK it’s definitely not the done thing to sit at the front. We like our privacy and don’t want to make small talk with strangers or worse, acquaintances!

I wondered why my opposite neighbours were always in their front garden, sitting on rocking chairs watching the world go by! I assumed it was because they're retired and bored, but it must be because their back garden is north facing (mine is south facing)

Blinkingbonkers · 08/09/2023 15:24

Ooooo, sorry - smug post incoming😂….- I have one🙋‍♀️! Built it last year - it’s lovely to have somewhere outside but undercover…..we have no neighbours within 200metres though so no intrusion, I just watch the wildlife go by😊

scoobiedoobiedoo · 08/09/2023 15:26

We have one, my husband offen sits out on it reading.

Zonder · 08/09/2023 15:29

I don't really get the north / south facing garden thing. Our front garden is south facing and we have a bench but it's too sunny with no shade. Our back garden is north facing and it still gets lots of sun but areas of shade too so it's more comfortable. I would rather sit out in a north facing garden whether it was front or back.

Blanketpolicy · 08/09/2023 15:29

If I had a front porch I wouldn't have a driveway!

But yes, if I had one that was not near roads/parking/people walking by within a few feet and a bit of greenery i would sit on it!

weebarra · 08/09/2023 15:31

My in laws have a beautiful enclosed porch which we sit in all the time, but they live next to a harbour in the highlands and can see right out to sea.
The only disadvantage is that sometimes tourists stop and stare in!

binsay · 08/09/2023 15:33

This is a thing for certain areas of the north west.

HappiDaze · 08/09/2023 15:36

No because I'd look like a fucking weirdo

spitefulandbadgrammar · 08/09/2023 15:37

I’ve got a porch and me and the DC sometimes sit out there watching older kids walk home from school. It’s not a great view really: too close to the pavement and therefore the cars, trees on the street but not a tree-lined street per se. I can see the appeal of a stoop in New York, or my friend’s house in Philly where there’s more distance between the houses in her neighbourhood, bigger front lawns and wider roads. On a UK terrace it feels a bit crowded and unpleasant.

Whatsoccuringthen · 08/09/2023 15:40

Live abroad (not America) would so love a big porch like they have in Desperate housewives.
We have a front patio area at the front of our house/patio doors. We have two chairs there and the hammock, we often sit out there in summer, it’s lovely, with lights hanging above. Some neighbours sit at the front, some don’t, but we’re not all sat looking at each other 😂Sometimes I might be swinging on the hammock and a neighbour across the road will pull up from work and we just say hi, it’s not embarrassing, although thinking of my childhood home in the U.K., it would seem v embarrassing for some reason

longestlurkerever · 08/09/2023 15:40

I sometimes sit out front with my coffee if the sun's out there and not at the back. Never used to but doorstep coffee became a thing in lockdown and I started appreciating my little front yard more. American porches are amazing but about 10 miles to the end of the drive and next house.

scoobiedoobiedoo · 08/09/2023 15:26

I’m just referring to basic porches like both of these, they aren’t anything special but it’s just so common in the suburbs in the US. I guess likely to be with space and being more set back but … I think it’s nice and I’m pretty antisocial when it comes to neighbours.

If you had a front porch would you sit on it?

BestIsWest · 08/09/2023 15:44

I would. We have a long front garden set high off the road and there’s room for a porch or even just a bench. I’d love to sit out there of an evening watching the world go by.

StuckintheUSA · 08/09/2023 15:45

I lived in the southern USA and had a front porch. We never, ever sat on it. Far too many mosquitoes and too humid for it to be comfortable. And there were snakes all over the place. Most people there had enclosed porches at the back of their houses.

I've also got a front porch where I live now (near Washington DC), but we've set up a catio, as the cats don't seem to mind the mosquitoes and other insects.

Wilkolampshade · 08/09/2023 15:48

I would. We've only a tiny terrace front garden but sometimes (rarely) sit out with a glass of wine and a fag. Its jolly. Also, (maybe?) acts a possible deterrent to local scrotes who pinch Amazon parcels/smoke crack on people's doirsteps/steal milk deliveries.....
If I had a proper veranda/porch combo you'd never get me off it. I'd be there with a shotgun under my tartan rug and an evil glint in my eye....
