If you had a front porch would you sit on it?

It’s so common in America and here I rarely see any houses with front porches.

Would be nice to have a morning coffee and watch the world go by.

I live in a 1970s grey box i.e ex council house. Id love a porch for summer, sadly I'm just one of those scummy mn neighbours that sits on her bench in the front garden drinking a beer/wine.

I have a lovely front porch, it's about 3m square and open at the front . We live rurally so no one actually goes past and it's a sheltered spot to sit. I have plants and a chair in there

Pallisers · 08/09/2023 16:09

I live in the US. We have a covered front porch running the length of the house and wide enough for two seating areas. During lockdown we often had people over for dinner there. The dog and I sit out nearly every day with a cup of coffee.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/09/2023 16:09

Only if I lived on Waltons Mountain.

Sagittariusrising · 08/09/2023 16:21

I live in a terrace and sometimes sit and drink my tea or coffee on the front doorstep if I'm doing something in the front garden and fancy a break. The front gets more sun so it's nice when it's not too hot. Occasionally neighbours will say hello when passing or stop for a chat.

I'd love an American style front porch if we had those sort of homes here.

boboshmobo · 08/09/2023 16:34

We do , we have seats out the front and often sit there . It's sunny and we are in a corner . I don't care if it's weird .

daffodilandtulip · 08/09/2023 16:41

I wrote on another thread that I'm considering a front bench, because my NDN is a dickhead and I'm sick of hearing his phonecalls. I'd absolutely love a front porch!

longtompot · 08/09/2023 16:52

I would like one at the front of my house, just a porch over the front door with seats either side to sit with a drink after or during gardening.
If I lived somewhere much more rural I'd love one that wrapped around the house with a swing seat. Heaven.

No because I'd look like a fucking weirdo

My DH is finding it more and more difficult to access the back garden. I was thinking of getting a bench for the front, but attitudes like this put me off. Why is it weird?

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/09/2023 17:00

My fantasy house has a veranda and a courtyard. I'd happily watch the world go by.

BarnacleBeasley · 08/09/2023 17:04

I would! I sometimes sit in the front garden. I live in a village and people like to chat, it gets the morning sun, and I like my neighbours.

reluctantbrit · 08/09/2023 17:20

No because our front garden is a drive way.

We just went to Rhode Island this summer and stayed a B&B in a really residential area. When we walked to the Main Street we talked about how each house had their porches with chairs and you saw people sitting there with papers, books, drinks, talking.

But - the plots are larger and you have a decent distance from the pavement to your house, often covered with shrubs. The car is in a drive next to it, not in front of the house. Huge difference to our houses here.

CeriB82 · 08/09/2023 18:09

i would! Love them! But i have a great setting for a morning coffee and no one sees me.

Take no notice @DragonScreeches , if you fancy a bench at the front just do it. Who cares what other people think?

I don't have a porch but I sit at the front all the time because the view is amazing.

MichaelAndEagle · 08/09/2023 18:26

I sit in my front garden on a going chair in the morning sometimes. People walk up and down the road, some say hi, some don't.
I'm not the only person who does it, but not many.
I think its a shame its seen as weird. I don't actually have a back garden at all.

Brightandshining · 08/09/2023 18:26

Definitely.
I have a tattered bench next to my front door and even tho it's just on the pavement by a busy main road I still sit there sometimes. I'd love a proper porch! Especially I'd love one of those wrap around verandas they have in American films

BigFatLiar · 08/09/2023 18:37

We have a sort of porch. It's a double glazed area at the front door, bit like a mini conservatory. Sometimes sit there. We also have stable door type front and back doors so have the tops open during the hot weather.

GasDrivenNun · 08/09/2023 18:39

No that would be weird to be out at the front in the UK

MintJulia · 08/09/2023 18:41

Yes. The last patch of sunshine in my garden is under the sitting room window. I've just invested in a bench to sit there with a drink 😊

It isn't Dragon, don't be put off by nonsense.

JudyP · 08/09/2023 18:42

We moved to the USA and we do have a front porch and over COVID we used it a lot as we would chat to neighbours and now we use it very occasionally but more the back garden as it's private but it's nice to sit at the front on a warm evening as we can sit with the dog and a drink and watch the world go by ( but it's a quiet street so not too much goes by!😁)

Riapia · 08/09/2023 19:05

Only if there was a 2 metre hedge all round.
Don’t want shaggy Dinah over the road glaring at me.
😉😁😁😁

Spanglybangles · 08/09/2023 19:06

Yes! I’d love one if I lived in the right ki d of neighbourhood. We are moving to Canada and I’m desperate for a home with a front porch if possible. I love to watch Home Town, set in Mississippi where most of the homes have gorgeous front porches. My favourite tv front porch is Maddies on Sweet Magnolias, as attached 😍

If you had a front porch would you sit on it?
Suckingalemon · 08/09/2023 19:09

Yes, in a rocking chair, with a shotgun in my lap

ThomasHardyPerennial · 08/09/2023 19:58

I live in a town with loads of back to back terraces, so a lot of people have benches in their front yard as that is their only outside space. I think it's nice!
