Can your shoes keep reinfecting you with athletes foot?

Gross I know!

I picked up athletesnfoot for the first time in my life about 5 months ago from a pedicure in a spa. Ugh

Anyway, I bought all the creams and sprays etc and it went within days. Stopped using the cream/spray

It came back. And that's been how it's gone for the past few months.

I've tried treating for a few extra days once it's cleared up but today it suddenly dawned on me that it could be in my shoes? I wear the same pair daily at the moment and have done for months - they're Birkenstocks but they're shearling ones

So ... could it be my shoes?

Your shoes and your socks. You should get rid of both I'm afraid.

Errolwasahero · 07/09/2023 22:33

Just keep treating, for months. It does go but you have to be consistent. Also wear cotton socks or keep your feet cool.

I was the same, didn’t have to change my shoes or socks…

Yes, unfortunately this is common.

You need to wash your socks at 60*. And you can get powder to treat your shoes with.

thinend · 07/09/2023 22:47

You need to dry out your shoes properly before wearing them again. Rotation of shoes is key so the fungus dies!

AppleKatie · 07/09/2023 22:52

Yes.

high temp wash for the socks with a decent detergent.

I think you can get sprays etc for the shoes. I would investigate that and in the meantime wear a different pair and leave those ones out in the sun for several hours.

have you tried lamisal once? That does seem to work quite well if you follow the instructions to the letter.

change/wash bedding/slippers anywhere else your feet have been.

FroggyWentACourtin · 07/09/2023 22:55

I don't wear socks - only when it's cold!

Shoes definitely never wet or sweaty. Always dry.

And I wash everything at 60! The eco warrior in me knows I shouldn't though!

Bedding is changed twice a week and it's always pure linen so I'm never sweaty

I will try the Lamisal once!

Just getting so fed up with it. And cross - because I know where I picked it up from

Thank you all for the suggestions

If you haven’t been wearing socks the. Yes definitely in the shoes.

I would take them out of service completely for a few weeks and treat them.

wear socks until you are rid of it.

Greyfoot · 07/09/2023 22:59

I don't know if that's why but I found the once only creams were effective but it came straight back. I eventually cleared it up using a daily spray for a few weeks, even when there were no symptoms.

domesticslattern · 07/09/2023 23:03

Shearling birkies worn every day without socks.... it stands to reason that these are either a big part of your problem or your entire problem. Do a little scientific experiment- don't wear them for a fortnight, then report back!!

FroggyWentACourtin · 08/09/2023 23:47

Ok so I've taken decisive action based on your recommendations!

Ordered a new pair of Birkenstocks from Next last night which arrived today - not the shearling ones!

Binned the shearling ones - I just feel they're going to be a breeding ground

Bought some Lamisol Once and applied that today and it's more or less done the trick already - feels so much better

So now it's a case of avoiding re infection - which is where I'm hoping the new Birkenstocks come in!

Cotton socks, properly washed, should help if it still persists. The recent hot weather looks to be over with in a few days.

What finally got rid of mine was clearing it up with the Lamisil but still using Daktarin spray daily for a couple of weeks afterwards, to keep it away. I haven't had it for years now. 🤞

FroggyWentACourtin · 09/09/2023 09:01

@Greyfoot I have the spray too so I'll take your advice and do that for a few weeks

So annoying to get it in the first place!

dont wear the new birkies for a week though!

if you put half treated feet in them it’s going to continue to cycle!

FroggyWentACourtin · 09/09/2023 10:18

@AppleKatie noooo! Don't tell me that!

AppleKatie · 09/09/2023 10:26

I know you hate socks (me too) but I really think it’s the only way whilst you treat.
