Chocolate brands that taste like they used to.

Not sure if it's the palm oil or what, but most chocolate tastes awful these days. Maybe vomit isn't the right word to describe it, but that's what it reminds me of. Cadburys, Galaxy even Yorkie all have that taste and waxy texture now.

I know Tony Chocoloney and Green and Blacks are still ok but they are so expensive! Are there any cheap choc brands out there that taste nice. Even Milka is horrible now!

Irish cadburys is available on Amazon in the UK. Caramellos available in bulk is very dangerous (but saves me so much luggage room, 😉)

I couldnt find Milka near me when I tried a few months ago, Morrisions used to sell it. Then when I was in Spain I bought several bars thinking I could take them home to enjoy. I was really surprised to find it was really waxy. Is Milka sold in the UK maybe still ok?

Milka is sold in home bargains.

I remember when it first came out. My dad used to have the job or sorting all the leaflets for the local paper boys to deliver. They would arrive at our driveway on big pallets (along with bundles of newspapers) and he had to count them by hand Confused Anyway, once we had a pallet full of samples - single bars of Milka stuck inside an envelope. I was in heaven! There wasn't many leftover but still enough for my brother and I to be like Grin Grin

I’ve got to the point where I can’t eat cheap choc at all—it is vile. I only buy the top of the range stuff, often organic or ‘artisan’ single estate. So Booja Booja, Willie’s, Vivani, Hu, various other organic brands that I can’t recall the names of but that you find in the supermarket. I justify the expense by rationalising that good choc is my only luxury/vice and because the taste is intense I don’t eat that much of it!

Are you actually checking the ingredients or just assuming because it's pricey/has a trendy name, that it's good quality?

@ParentingSolo if it doesn’t pass the taste test I don’t buy it again. For instance green & blacks is organic but I hate the taste; montezuma is organic and has good ingredients but it is too sweet for me.

DrNo007 · 08/09/2023 12:38

@ParentingSolo
having said that I do check ingredients and would not buy choc with palm oil in—it is just nasty.

I'm glad to know it's not just me that is finding Cadburys etc un-palatable now.
It did cross my mind if having covid last year changed my taste buds a little. I completely lost taste for a while when I had it.

Milka used to be amazing, but it's now noticeably going the same way as Cadbury's. Both now owned by Mondelez, I note...

Gowlett · 08/09/2023 17:41

Irish Cadburys, yes. I used to bring a supply back with me when I lived in London / Paris years ago. The airport used to do this pack with four big Dairy Milk x 2 / Whole Nut / Golden Crisp. Kept me going! There was a corner shop in Watford that randomly had it, every flavour (bigger range in Ireland too!) which I’d stick up in whenever I was there.

Gowlett · 08/09/2023 17:42

M&S Cooking Chocolate. It’s amazing! No mucky ingredients & half the price of the Swiss / posh ranges.

Now that there's an edit function, could OP go through the thread and add the contenders to the OP? This thread is very important.
I was going to say Aero is not bad, kind of melts in mouth like chocolate should.

Startyabastard · 08/09/2023 17:50

Home bargains sells Milka.

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/09/2023 17:59

I hope it's true about Irish Cadbury's because I've just ordered some and some Tayto's crisps. Plus a bunch of random Irish food to meet the minimum order.

Will you come back and tell us what it’s like?!

Can I ask where you ordered it from?

Twirls still taste like cadburys

I like twirls for this reason. But I bought one the other day and it had the shiny plasticky texture like the rest of it has. I’m hoping it was just a one off bad bar and that they aren’t slowly changing them into the modern nasty Cadbury chocolate.

Loopytiles · 09/09/2023 08:36

Agree with PPs about Tony’s, received a selection box and disliked, and that M&S still has some good chocolate.

Hard to find but I think the small tubes of After Eight cubes were still good last time I had some.

Calistano · 09/09/2023 08:42

Tony's is shit too and so expensive, I do like lindt, the little sainsburys near me always has the reindeer/bunny vastly reduced after Christmas and easter, think I overdosed last easter. Are those weird ritter sport things still nice? I used to love the whole nut one.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 09/09/2023 18:49

Home bargains sells Milka.

It doesn't taste like 'old' Milka, though.

My absolute favourite used to be these ones, but they seem to have disappeared from the UK completely.

I also loved the yoghurt crisp ones - different flavours such as strawberry, and available in single-serving bars rather than big ones - but I've only ever seen those sold in continental Europe.

Chocolate brands that taste like they used to.
LadyEloise1 · 09/09/2023 19:28

Remember not all Cadburys chocolate sold in Ireland is made in Ireland.
You have to check the identifying letter and number on the packaging.
If it has OCO it's chocolate made in Cadbury's factory in Coolock in Dublin, which is the only Cadbury's factory in Ireland.

SoftDay · 09/09/2023 20:33

I was told that the regular, eight-square bars are still made in Coolock, but the larger bars and boxes are made elsewhere. My extensive taste testing suggests this is probably true. I only buy the eight-square bars now; they still taste lovely and creamy, whereas the larger bars seem tasteless and waxy to me.

HappyAsASandboy · 09/09/2023 20:36

Twirl, wispa, flake and Freddie still taste like they should. Although fed do sometimes have a slight coconut taste to me, which might be my imagination?!

Marabou is the closest to old-recipe dairy milk that I can find.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 09/09/2023 21:50

I wonder how Cadbury's try to explain this away, when proper old-recipe Cadbury's chocolate is available in the same shops as new wrecked, waxy, palm-oily Cadbury's chocolate?

At least here in the UK, they can (and do) try to gaslight us that it's still exactly the same as it's always been, as we can't easily compare it.

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 09/09/2023 22:43

Very sweet tooth here and used to eat my body weight in chocolate on a very regular basis until palm oil crept in, so I’ve been looking out for a moreish chocolate.
I’ve tried a lot of brands recommended on previous threads and always been disappointed.
I’ve found one that melts and tastes like it used to from The chocolate society.
It’s not cheap but I suppose that’s the price you pay for quality.

Ritter Sport is excellent, as good as it has always been and it’s very affordable. I’m currently enjoying a delicious bar of dark chocolate with hazelnuts. It’s currently on special offer at Waitrose.
