Chocolate brands that taste like they used to.

Not sure if it's the palm oil or what, but most chocolate tastes awful these days. Maybe vomit isn't the right word to describe it, but that's what it reminds me of. Cadburys, Galaxy even Yorkie all have that taste and waxy texture now.

I know Tony Chocoloney and Green and Blacks are still ok but they are so expensive! Are there any cheap choc brands out there that taste nice. Even Milka is horrible now!

Is there any truth in the rumour that Irish Dairy Milk (as available now) is the same as the amazing old-recipe UK Dairy Milk of yesteryear that those of us over a certain age mournfully yearn for?

If so, we may end up with Irish and British MNers arguing, with both of them thinking the other is a tastebudless idiot, who must be absolutely insane not to realise that it's clearly still exactly the same as it always was/obviously now ruined beyond all belief!

JamiesTurkeyTwizzler · 08/09/2023 07:15

Ritta Sport Alpine Milk reminds me of old dairy milk.

PuppyMonkey · 08/09/2023 07:18

Fry’s chocolate cream still works for me.
I also still enjoy a Wispa.
Aldi Chocleur range is bloody good too.

Meant to add Tony’s tastes awful imho.

sorrynotathome · 08/09/2023 07:24

I read this a while ago and found it to be true - supermarket own-brand chocolate often does NOT contain palm oil. Easy to check the ingredients anyway (I did because I couldn’t quite believe it!)

mizu · 08/09/2023 07:45

Yes to Montezuma - expensive but great chocolate. Especially the chocolate buttons. I buy a bag of dark ones and a bag of milk ones every week or so.

And some of the M&S bars of chocolate are good.

And Hotel Chocolate super milk.

⬆️ all of these are not so cheap though.

IHeartGeneHunt · 08/09/2023 07:57

Lidl chocolate- not the cheapest one, the fancy packet one- is very nice.

The flakes that go in 99s still taste like proper chocolate.

hallana · 08/09/2023 08:04

I used to eat a chocolate bar nearly every day and now maybe once a month. I just don't find these strange wax blocks appealing. I mean, maybe it's a good thing, but it's strange - who is eating this stuff. I don't think it's hurting their sales, is it? So most people don't seem to mind at all.

This reminds me of a very strange interaction we had with an ice cream man earlier this summer. I asked for a 99 and he went Hmm and tried to claim that the 99 referred ONLY to the flake and it wasn’t the name of the actual cone/ice cream concoction itself. I was apparently supposed to ask for a cone and then add “with a 99” if I wanted the flake adding. Bizarre imho, I’ve always just called the whole thing a 99.Confused 🍦🍦🍦

That's interesting about Twirls and Flakes.

Cadbury's is still better tasting than most "cheap" chocolate but I agree some bars are better than others. The bars in Heroes are still good. (whereas everything in Celebrations is just sugary)

The chocolate around Crunchies is still good.

I'm in Italy and we get loads of Ritter varieties- the milk one in the light blue packet is good- kind of like old Galaxy I'd say rather than Cadbury.

I bought a nostalgic box of Black Magic this summer and it was disgusting. Just tasted sweet and bitter at the same time. If you shut your eyes you couldn't tell what flavour centre you'd got.

I bought a Tony’s bar to try-after reading a thread on here and thought it was horrible -waxy and nasty! And expensive!

Bluevelvetsofa · 08/09/2023 08:54

Moser Roth is Aldi’s posh one. Then there’s Chocleur and Dairyfine. They have done a Toblerone dupe in the past, which was great.

Otherwise, all the ones that don’t taste oily are expensive.

Spookymormonhelldream · 08/09/2023 08:57

Can confirm re Irish Cadburys being the same as old British Cadburys. It is available in some supermarkets in the
'Foods of the world' bit 😁.
Sainsburys on Purley Way has it.

Haha yes it's true our dairy milk still tastes the same!

IHeartGeneHunt · 08/09/2023 09:06

@SoIinvictus I got some Dairy Box not long ago and they were so disappointing. Honestly couldn't taste the difference between each one, even the orange one.

LakeFlyPie · 08/09/2023 09:16

I think Aldi chocolate is the best, all of the ranges seem ok. I find Tony's waxy and overpriced 🤢

SoIinvictus · 08/09/2023 09:16

I'm moving to Ireland. Or Purley Way.

DisforDarkChocolate · 08/09/2023 09:23

I go for Ritter Sport now when I buy chocolate, I always check the label incase the have started using palm oil. I rarely buy chocolate now 😔

Minttee · 08/09/2023 09:26

I'm in Ireland and yes the dairy milk is creamier and like the old dairy milk. The dairy milk Caramello is also 👌

Lionoso · 08/09/2023 11:37

I couldnt find Milka near me when I tried a few months ago, Morrisions used to sell it. Then when I was in Spain I bought several bars thinking I could take them home to enjoy. I was really surprised to find it was really waxy. Is Milka sold in the UK maybe still ok?

So do the cadburys little bars.

How little are we talking? These were amazing - do they even make them at all anymore?!

I miss these so much! They used to sell them in a clear, cheap plastic container (plastic like the kind supermarket cupcakes come in), stuffed full!

evtheria · 08/09/2023 11:54

Ok so this popular YouTuber has his own line of chocolate bars, I've found them in Spar, and there is NO palm oil, and the ingredients list is about 4-7 long, depending on the flavour of the bar.

"Cane sugar, organic cocoa butter, organic chocolate liquor, organic milk and organic vanilla powder"

I only know this because I bought one for my DS9 and happened to read the back, was very surprised!

DrNo007 · 08/09/2023 12:02

I’ve got to the point where I can’t eat cheap choc at all—it is vile. I only buy the top of the range stuff, often organic or ‘artisan’ single estate. So Booja Booja, Willie’s, Vivani, Hu, various other organic brands that I can’t recall the names of but that you find in the supermarket. I justify the expense by rationalising that good choc is my only luxury/vice and because the taste is intense I don’t eat that much of it!

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 08/09/2023 12:15

Wow, thanks to the Irish MNers for confirming that - I'm not sure it makes me feel any better to know it now, though!

New (UK) Cadbury's for me always used to be the cheap chocolate (4 bars for £1) - but now the prices have rocketed, but with the very low quality still untouched, of course.
