Fairly urgent refund question - card vs Apple wallet

Does anyone know if a store says a refund has to go back on the original payment card, can that be a virtual card (the same account) in the Apple wallet? Thanks!

I got a refund in store yesterday and it went on the card in my Apple wallet.

I had to open wallet and give them a code.

Usually not, as the Apple Wallet 'version' of the card has a different card number (Apple Pay creates a virtual card for use in the wallet).

So you'll not normally be able to get a refund to the Apple Wallet card, as the original method of payment has to be used during the refund.

The Apple wallet card has the same last 4 digits visible?

Went back home to get the card and then they didn't even need anything, it just went back onto the payment method automatically 🙄
