Are you surprised if someone has no tattoos?

Is it more common now to have tattoos?
I'm almost verging on surprised if I see a celebrity that doesn't have any tattoos.
I almost expect someone I meet in real life to have at least one tattoo and am taken aback a bit if they don't.
For context, I don't have any at all however it just seems like almost everyone has one.

I know very conservative 60 year olds getting their first tattoos and alternative 20 somethings with multiple piercings etc with no tattoos so no it doesn't suprise me either way.

Iwiicit · 06/09/2023 20:41

No

OctoblocksAssemble · 06/09/2023 20:42

Nope. I don't have any, and I know other people who don't.

No, for normal non celebs I'd say most don't have any.

SirChenjins · 06/09/2023 20:42

No - I know more people without them than who have them.

FinnRussell · 06/09/2023 20:43

No. I'd guess most people I know don't have tattoos, easily. Not taken aback either way.

Mumuser124 · 06/09/2023 20:44

It doesn't shock me when people don't have tattoos but recently somebody was shocked I didn't have any. On that basis, I don't think you're alone in this OP.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 06/09/2023 20:44

No, I feel like the majority still dont and basing opinions on what celebrities are doing is a bad idea

Princessconsuelabananahammock9 · 06/09/2023 20:45

Most of my straight friends have no tattoos. My queer friends and I all have them. Not sure what that's about, but it's a pattern I have noticed.

tinytemper66 · 06/09/2023 20:46

I am 57 and have managed to get through for without one. I don't like them and don't want one.

tigpig · 06/09/2023 20:46

Most people I know don't have them.

ChangingTheNarative · 06/09/2023 20:46

DH doesn't so I'm not too surprised when others don't

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 06/09/2023 20:50

No, not at all.

BMW6 · 06/09/2023 20:50

Most people I am related to or know don't have one.

Vitriolinsanity · 06/09/2023 20:52

I have none. I admit I'm not a massive fan. However, the people I know (very many) that do clearly love them, so I find myself more and more ambivalent.

There was a chap on my last holiday that had three unbelievably well done tarantulas crawling up his chest and neck. I have to say, as an arachnophobic that was repellent.

My grandfather, merchant navy, Dunkirk Small Ship pilot had tombstones on his forearms. They were my first memories of tattoos and I think that's where my dislike emanates.

Iheartmysmart · 06/09/2023 20:55

I’ve got several tattoos but I’m the only one out of my friendship group who has. We’re all mid fifties.

Namechangedforspooky · 06/09/2023 20:55

I wouldn’t notice either way tbh

interesting that people are so convinced that they don’t know anyone with tattoos
I have multiple but none visible and have a very respectable career 😬

Tonight1 · 06/09/2023 20:55

No, I personally don't as they're difficult to reverse and can become blurred over time.

I don't dictate what people do with their own bodies though.

Icannotthinkofaname · 06/09/2023 20:56

The majority of people I know do not have tattoos.
I have noticed that, apart from black patterns at base of spine from the nineties, the people I know with tattoos have them as either a memorial for someone or to symbolise a struggle they have been through often mental health related.
I think that this is a reflection of the increased openess and acceptance surrounding poor mental health. People no longer hide their struggles.

ManchesterLu · 06/09/2023 20:56

I'm not surprised, but the way people talk about it always makes it seem like it's expected, saying things like 'got my first tattoo' as if it's something everyone does multiple times during the life.

pizzaHeart · 06/09/2023 21:01

I won’t be surprised, I don’t have any myself. I’m still surprised when people have a lot of them.

mondaytosunday · 06/09/2023 21:01

No. I only know one person (my 34 year old stepson who lost a bet) who has one.

shitetatts · 06/09/2023 21:02

I hardly know anyone without tattoos, and I live in Cambridge. My CEO and GP have tattoos.

Sexisthairdressers · 06/09/2023 21:03

Almost everyone on Naked Attraction has loads!

Screamingabdabz · 06/09/2023 21:06

Nope - it’s pretty much a tattoo free zone in our large extended family (of all ages) but we went to our local swimming baths recently and we were the only untattooed bodies there.
