Well that was unexpected

I was a day case in hospital yesterday ( Big wave to Barts, 900 years and counting!) and during the afternoon a fruit trolley suddenly appeared in the room . I haven’t been in hospital for many years , and if I recall the only refreshments that trundled around then was a tea trolley and some tepid water in plastic jugs, so a fresh fruit trolley was a lovely surprise. Bananas, apples, and fresh oranges or mandarins peeled and in a cup. I had a banana.

How delightful @viques , was it being pushed by a WI lady? Were you, perhaps, in a charming 1950s time warp?
Hope your medical issue is sorted too; top service all round. 😆

I was in hospital recently and the food was quite nice

I think if it was a 1950 s time warp it would have definitely been the tea trolley, though the tea would have come in a green China cup with a matching saucer served by a ward orderly who was possibly related to Julie Walters in the soup sketch.! The fruit trolley was pushed by a young man in full possession of his faculties. I am well Thankyou , a bit bruised and battered but on the mend.

I had taken my own food in, but was offered a choice of sandwiches, which I declined, then the nurse brought in an apple, a decent yogurt, a packet of crisps and fresh orange juice, in case I fancied them! The fruit trolley came later.

Some kind of charitable initiative maybe?
Sounds nice though.

MistyTrains2 · 06/09/2023 13:22

These things make all the difference. I remember a volunteer bringing round ice cream on my ward.

PuttingDownRoots · 06/09/2023 13:28

Sounds better than the food my brother was offered in hospital recently. Omelette and mashed potato was a memorable combination...

Fruit sounds quite appetising.

I would have killed for this when I was in hospital recently! I can't say the food was bad, because it wasn't, but there was a distinct lack of fruit and vegetables.

That's amazing. When I was in hospital with dd with a broken arm and waiting on an operation, I had pretty much fuck all to eat. We arrived at 8pm (no dinner beforehand as was in the middle of cooking it when said broken arm occurred). Dd couldn't eat as nil by mouth, but I went about 18 hours with only a piece of toast, as all cafes were closed during the night and by the time they opened in the morning, we were waiting for dd to go into theatre, so I couldn't just disappear to have some breakfast. Thankfully, a lovely nurse did bring me a tea and a piece of toast around the time I looked like I was going to pass out. Fresh fruit is lovely. With all the flapping about about processed foods, it's nice to see that something is being done about the rubbish and unhealthy food options in hospitals.

I always think its wild that hospitals serve such shite, their canteens are terrible - not a fresh veg or fruit item to be found. The shops are all junk food. At least some of the bigger hospitals have M and S in them now!
When I went in to have DD, DH brought an icebox filled with slush isotonic drinks, nice sandwiches, fruit, trail mix. The midwives loved it!

Try being a coeliac in hospital!! One memorable offering at dinner was a plate of tomatoes and an apple... that's it!

stbrandonsboat · 06/09/2023 14:33

When I was in as a day case recently, it was a very hot day and the kitchen sent up some little containers of ice cream 🥰

pickledandpuzzled · 06/09/2023 16:29

I had an excellent time recently. I was on and off the nil by mouth list so kept missing food. So they brought toast, sandwiches, crisps, cake... honestly it was builder's packed lunch kind of food. Very welcome!

Doyoureallyhavetoask · 06/09/2023 16:38

Sounds lovely! I recently had day surgery and got a roll and jam afterwards. Not complaining but fruit would also have been nice!

My df was recently admitted to the frailty ward after a fall.
When I visited I was offered tea or coffee and biscuits.
Dad had a really good tea of sausage, mash and veg followed by apple pie and custard.
Amazing.
