Do you leave soap, shampoo etc bottles out in your shower/bath?

Had a couple of bathroom fitters round today.
The wall is 1750 and baths are typically 1700, so would need a bit of filler at the end (the current bath, which has the shower over, is shorter and the filler is a tile width).
The fitter commented that normally he'd build the whole wall out to pack the gap rather than have a filled edge.
I said that I found the extra bit really useful for shampoo bottles etc and he said "I'm not allowed to leave them out in my house".
WTF???
Do you put your shower products away in a cupboard after you've used them?

I have a 3 shelf caddy that sits in the space between the tap end of the bath and the wall. Bottom caddy is toddler bath toys, middle caddy is body washes and bubble baths and top caddy is shampoos, conditioners and beard scrubs. I don’t have the storage space or the inclination to tidy any further than that.

gogomoto · 05/09/2023 22:06

Of course, multiple

MasterCherry · 05/09/2023 22:07

If I put them away I'd have to dry the bottles first...

I’ve got a corner wall mount next to the bath they go in that.

If they were put away you might forget to get them out and then you would have to get out of the shower or bath all wet to get them. I kindly always make sure that DH has a new shampoo bottle out ready for when it runs out

ManchesterLu · 05/09/2023 22:11

When I got my new bathroom, just ONE year ago, I vowed I'd always put everything away to make sure it stayed completely clean.

Now there's about 10 choices of shower gel, 4 shampoos and various conditioners. And I love it!

Yep leave them out. Only times I'd put away is to a) hide something fancy from DD(10) who loves to use up a load of something expensive or b) if my house was being photographed for sale, then it looks terrible!

WandaWonder · 05/09/2023 22:31

Practical comes first for me with everything so yes I leave them out

I have wall mounted dispensers in the shower like this https://www.johnlewis.com/simplehuman-wall-mounted-shower-soap-pump-dispenser-triple/p4791137
Everything else is away in a cupboard, or neatly stored on a shelf.

I hate clutter.

Hillsmakeyoustrong · 05/09/2023 22:34

I dry my bottles and put them away.

I thought id go a bit minimalist and it's gone too far.

They are the ones I have got, they are really good

We changed the bathroom earlier this year inc changing the shower. I had a shelf built into the wall specifically for keeping bottles out!

Sothisiit · 05/09/2023 22:44

Make a false wall level with the bath end and get your tradesman to make a nice recessed tiled shelf for you shampoo bottles.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 05/09/2023 22:44

Mine go in the drawers under the basin. I can’t bear a multitude of bottles hanging around. Same in the kitchen. All stuff like washing up liquid etc. goes in a cupboard. Fortunately I live alone so I don’t have to nag other people into putting everything away.

Cuppaand2biscuits · 05/09/2023 22:47

My mother in law does this, everything put back in the cupboard and when we holiday with them we're expected to do the same.
What a waste of everyone's time everyday.

Me too! The first thing on my wishlist was a shampoo niche built into the stud wall in the new shower. The bathroom guy even fetched my shampoo bottles to make sure he got the dimensions right.

You need to leave room at the end of the bath where your head goes.
I know because in our bathroom, the wall is almost flush with the end of the bath, and it means you can't put your head back properly if you are reading in the bath. You need at least 6" beyond the end of the bath before the wall.
And yes, shampoo etc does stay out in this house.

butteredbarmbrack · 05/09/2023 23:00

We used to leave bottles sitting out, but got the silicon/mastic round the bath redone a few months ago and now we put the bottles away after use, to see if that will help stop spots of mould appearing. So far, it does look like it might be helping (we thought it might mean water draining away better from the edges rather than sitting among the bottles).

We do have a cupboard and some open shelves beside the bath, so we have a basket to keep the bottles in which is close to hand. Still visible rather than hidden away, but it is less obtrusive than when they were on the edge of the bath.

CantThinkOfANewUsernameAgain · 05/09/2023 23:01

I put away in a wall cabinet. No ledges to use. And if left on edge of bath my dc use them to make 'potions'. Or they get knocked off.
My bathroom is tiny so it also keeps it clearer

I didn't go into detail in the OP, but the issue with the false wall is that building up to the ceiling means the coving will need refitting, which means the ceiling needs reskimming, which all adds to the costs - and seems excessive when I quite like the shelf!
The ceiling is artex, as is all of upstairs, and the entire house has coving.
I don't mind the artex, and quite like coving - both of which the fitters clearly wanted to change!

And in fact, the main reason for the refit is to add a separate shower so the bath will only be used infrequently when I want to soak, so bottles probably won't be left there anyway.
They will be left in the shower, but that won't have room for an inbuilt niche.

My mum does. Her bathroom is like being in a hotel.

Well, I was thinking that as well, and then trying to imagine lying in the bath and whether I actually used that space or not - but I couldn't be bothered to go and lie in the bath to find out. I will do so before making any decisions on this matter!

No… we’ve got a little ledge where the pipes have been boxed in. Very handy storing stuff, however most of the time stuff gets left all over the bathroom 😂

DelphiniumBlue · 05/09/2023 23:08

If you are going to do a test, do it with a towel wrapped around your head, as that takes up more space than you would expect .
I get annoyed every time I get in the bath, get the extra ledge in if you possibly can!
