Vegetarians and vegans: What would you like to be served at a wedding?

VegetarianWedding · 04/09/2023 20:04

I'm helping to plan a wedding for a friend.

She's going to offer a vegetarian and a vegan option. Two separate meals so that the vegetarians can have dairy and/or egg.

What sort of dishes would you like?

TIA

I’m vegetarian not vegan but I hate it when the only veggie option appears to be Goats Cheese tart or similar.

BansheeofInisherin · 04/09/2023 20:08

Well ideally Indian or Thai or Malaysian food! Has the most options.

Failing that, I am.happy with good bread/interesting salads/risotto/pasta/nice desert.

No fake meat! I detest it.

Maireas · 04/09/2023 20:10

Not Thai food, or anything too strong. I had a lovely vegetable pie at one wedding - it was delicious!

A rich garlicky pasta and tomato dish with salad.

Mooserp · 04/09/2023 20:12

I agree with no fake meat.

Kellioo · 04/09/2023 20:12

Personally I love a pie, I hate it when people think it has to be super healthy as you're vegetarian. It doesn't.

Zippedydoodahday · 04/09/2023 20:14

A proper vegan dessert that isn't fruit or bloody sorbet.

BansheeofInisherin · 04/09/2023 20:14

Dessert not desert!

Yes, I suppose most people won't want Asian food so I bow to the majority.

BabyStopCryin · 04/09/2023 20:15

The nicest meal I ever had in a hotel event was an aubergine sliced in half and filled with a chickpea curry. It was absolutely lovely. This was over 20 years ago at a tasting for an event and I still drool at the thought of it.

What is the meat option? Maybe match it (so Italian, Indian, etc). I love a curry, maybe open ravioli with a fancy salad?

Risotto is great but so often has porcini that aren’t washed properly (and crunchy - boak!).

Hellostrawberries · 04/09/2023 20:16

My favourite vegan option at a wedding a couple of years ago was little individual shepherd's pies. Rich, garlicky, tomato and lentil filling topped with sweet potato mash. They were amazing.

Horriblewoman · 04/09/2023 20:17

We did a roasted aubergine, halloumi and spiced lentil filo tart with a warm tomato salad.

as a pescatarian who always has the veggie option my only plea is no goats cheese or beetroot!

Absolutely! Something really tasty and hearty is nice!

SwankyPants · 04/09/2023 20:20

I don't think I've ever had a decent veggie meal.
Meat eaters had roast, veggies got salad and Chinese pancakes.
Another veggie meal was a square of pastry with a sliced tomato on it. Yes really!
A decent pasta or risotto would be good. Or a roast.

MerryChristmasToYou · 04/09/2023 20:20

Anything edible would be fine.

Something that is not goat's cheese, risotto, beetroot or butternut squash.
If there is a starter and a main, no similar ingredients in both. (e.g. mushroom starter followed by mushroom main)

SirenSays · 04/09/2023 20:21

Anything that doesn't have mushrooms!

BansheeofInisherin · 04/09/2023 20:23

@Horriblewoman that sounds delicious. I love roasted aubergine in any form.

Cookerhood · 04/09/2023 20:24

We did a vegan soup or vegan roasted tomato tart for starter & mushroom risotto or gnocchi in roasted pepper sauce. Desert was a vegan apple & blackberry crumble.

Absolutely anything appropriately labelled so I don't have to eat very little or try and have a conversation about whether its genuine Parmesan or the gelatine content of desserts with a waitress.

AutumnCrow · 04/09/2023 20:30

Thank you for asking! There's some really good ideas here.

As pp has said, what are the meat eaters having, OP?

And do you want the vegans and vegetarians to have the same food?

Good luck Smile

Newuser75 · 04/09/2023 20:32

No mushrooms 🙈. It's always mushrooms! No risotto, it's generally mushroom risotto!

Maybe some kind of gnocchi or pasta

Love a pie too! For main or dessert.

Hate that meat eaters get a scrumptious dessert and veggies get boring old fruit. Again.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/09/2023 20:36

Personally I would like
harissa houmous with warm pitta to start
open filo tart of spinach, ricotta, pine nuts and caramelised onion
then eton mess
please

Maireas · 04/09/2023 20:37

Agree: no mushrooms, love pies!

😋This sounds amazing.

You can get vegan desserts including whipped ‘cream’ they’re lovely. Wouldn’t notice the difference personally. Neither did DH who eats
meat /dairy.
