Am loving this thread! San Francisco and
Barcelona are my contributions though I usually spend my time in South London or Vietnam!

I visited San Francisco in about 2002 and it was a beautiful, vlean, vibrant, friendly city. I visited again in 2015, it had changed so much - for the worst. Very sad.

Knock

localnotail · 05/09/2023 22:46

Prague - definitely, overpriced, overcrowded tourist trap

Paris - a bit meh, i guess its ok - just not as great as it is portrayed in popular culture. Really liked smaller towns, been to some amazing places in France.

xmaswiththeinlaws · 05/09/2023 22:52

Disneyland Paris, especially in winter, ridiculously long queues considering the cold, wet weather and not being school holidays.

Most people in Sydney think Bondi is overrated but are happy to keep the good beaches for the locals

I disagree with whoever said Kraków, I love it and Warsaw was surprisingly lovely this summer.

I can't really think of any where I hated, but I wouldn't go back to New York - waste of money and London is much nicer. If I had to say a place I wouldn't be thrilled about visiting again, it would be Edinburgh. It was so grimey and dirty. Loved the buildings but the P*ss and spit all over the floor made me just want to run away, probably the most dirtiest place I have been.

London is nice but Edinburgh is grimey and dirty 🫤

Never been to Turkey, i'm in two minds about it - can I ask what you don't like about it?

There’s some really beautiful places in Turkey and I was definitely against going initially

London
I was in London recently, I couldn’t wait to leave.
Camdon was a dump! Lots of tat. So crowded. Watched a man on a bus dropping half eaten sandwich, bottle of coke on the floor of the bus before getting off. The place was so dirty and tacky, stuffed full of people. Honestly it was horrible.

Agree, it’s a total dump. Everywhere smells of fried chicken, nobody talks to one another, it’s sticky and bizarrely people pay millions to live there.

Probably get a lot of hate as half of MN likely live there.

Buggersticks · 05/09/2023 23:17

@AlisonDonut
Totally agree. Got mugged on subway.

Tenerife.

I like Tenerife but I don’t think it was really rated, let alone overrated 🤣

When did you go? I went for a month in the 80’s - it was divine. Traffic free, hippy/backpack culture, very gay, very arty, loved it. But so long ago!

This was 2009

Cottagewitch · 05/09/2023 23:30

Barbados too. So boring. Really run down. Not really any decent places to sit in with food. Shopping is rubbish- no local markets or anything like that just stalls selling knock off designer gear. No attractions- once you’ve done a rum
tout and a boat trip that’s it. Unless it’s just for a weekend you’ll die of boredom.
I was literally counting down the days until I could go home. The people are really lovely minds.

Surprised to see Turkey on this thread, of course the tourist areas can cater to those that want their egg and chips etc. But get out and about and the scenery is stunning and the people are so nice, it’s clean and there is something for everyone. Love the East meets West aspect.

As for the UK, why are people saying places like Skegness!? No-one has ever rated it so it doesn’t disappoint. The most disappointing UK destination are The Cotswolds. What is the appeal? It is disappointing because it is hyped up as being a cut above but it just seems really dull to me, sort of average and uninspiring.

The Cotswolds is lovely if you like a nice walk of about ten to fifteen miles followed by a pub dinner.

bunsen · 05/09/2023 23:54

Hopefully new tourism will flourish. Maybe helping restore the shit we have created, else more local travel could be appreciated. Not to be a kill joy at all, but the expectation of travel is much higher than it should be really. Whats wrong with one bloody holiday a year and the rest in your own country? I know, perhaps I am a little jealous 😂

justjuggling · 06/09/2023 00:41

Los Angeles and Bali.

MCal174 · 06/09/2023 01:12

Lots of people saying London. I've always liced here and I love it. If you hated it you probably won't come back but if you do - post on here and get some tips first. I guarantee if you spend your time on Madame Tussaud's, Oxford Street, and Leicester Square (which smells of piss!) You're gonna hate it. But London is massive and you don't have to go to those horrible places 😊
